1. The Ox and the Frog
"Oh Father," said a little Frog to the big one sitting by the side of
a pool, "I have seen such a terrible monster! It was big as a
mountain, with horns on its head, and a long tail, and it had hoofs
divided in two."
"Tush, child, tush," said the old Frog, "that was only Farmer
White's Ox. It isn't so big either; he may be a little bit taller than
I, but I could easily make myself quite as broad; just you see."
So he blew himself out, and blew himself out, and blew himself out.
"Was he as big as that?" asked he.
"Oh, much bigger than that," said the young Frog.
Again the old one blew himself out, and asked the young one if the
Ox was as big as that.
"Bigger, Father, bigger," was the reply.
So the Frog took a deep breath, and blew and blew and blew, and
swelled and swelled.
And then he said, "I'm sure the Ox is not as big as this."
But at that moment he burst. http://allaboutfrogs.org/stories/ox.html

Individual
Our success in any undertaking
depends on our present efforts.
This fable is our way of reminding everyone that we all have strengths and weaknesses. We are here for a big purpose of helping the teachers in the field so they can be better prepared in implementing the Math Grade 9 curriculum to our students. The emphasis is that this training is not an opportunity for us to compete with one another. We can’t be like the frog whose conceit prevents him from remembering that he could hurt himself by bursting/exploding in his attempt of proving a point that he’s the greatest. Instead this is a great opportunity to celebrate our best practices so we can enrich our capabilities and broaden our mathematical horizons. As facilitators, we will try our best to do facilitation, not monopolize. In short, there are no antagonists or villain in our 5-day show, only leading ladies and leading men who work together. After all, according to Ma’am Beth Cataw, this is a task that is both great and heroic. Hence, we capitalize on humility and open-mindedness. There are times that errors happen. We can point out these errors but we must not forget that it is not always what we say but how we say it. Since we are all trainers, it is expected that we are graceful at all times especially when we disagree. Remember that being graceful means being respectful. Hence I like to call this training class Rated R as in Respect!
I am a widow of an American National so that my name sounds foreign. And NO, my husband is not related to Kobe Bryant. In 1993, I graduated Magna cum laude in my Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education major in Mathematics at the University of the Visayas. I earned a Certificate of Proficiency in Master of Arts in Education major in Mathematics at Cebu Normal University in 1999. Through a DepEd-NEAP Scholarship Program, I was awarded for Outstanding Performance when I finished Master of Science in Teaching Mathematics at the Ateneo de Manila University in 2001. I have been pursuing PhD in Education major in Mathematics Education at the University of Philippines Open University since November 2012. I have already finished 18 units and hopefully will graduate in 2016 or in early 2017. I am currently working at the Quality Assurance Division of DepEd Region VII. Before this post, I was a school head for four years, a math teacher of Minglanilla Science High School in 9 years, and a classroom teacher of a private school for two years.
Today, we will take the first step in our role as Trainers to guide and support our teachers to effectively deliver the K to 12 Basic Education Program. But before we proceed with our task, let us think about correlating the objectives of the training with our goals for learning so that within the first hours of training, we can begin working together.
How did you feel about the activity?
What do the responses in each quadrant tell us about this training?
How will these help in achieving the training objectives?
Connect the participants’ responses in the Analysis Question 2 to the following:
Quadrant 1: Knowledge
Quadrant 2: Challenges
Quadrant 3: Changes
Quadrant 4: Preparations
To the facilitator:
Give them a minute to write their individual commitment to make the most of this training.
Let them share their commitments in their respective groups.
Let them craft their group commitment. Give each group the template.
Let each group present their commitment in a creative manner.
Challenge everyone to keep their commitment.
Say this:
In the next five days, we will immerse ourselves in long hours and hard work. We have levelled our expectations with that of the training. It is now up to us to come out as winners of this training. All I can leave you with as we proceed with the training is this belief: Our success in any undertaking depends on our present efforts. Thank you and happy learning!
Suggestions:
In this slide, put the following line in the green box (for individual): To make the most of this training, I will _______________.
On another slide, emphasize this statement: Our success in any undertaking depends on our present efforts.
