Brian Elliott designed a floor plan for a residential home using Autodesk Revit as part of his senior project. His blueprint showed the first and second floor plans with appliance and furniture placement. It also included 3D renderings in his powerpoint presentation. In his research paper, he examined how the sub-prime mortgage crisis could affect future job prospects for architects. While the housing market is still diminished, it may recover by his expected college graduation in 2016. Through the project, Brian discovered he enjoys design but dislikes the tedious tasks involved in following building codes and regulations for architecture.

Dear Judges:
Hi, my name is Brian Elliott. In the future, I hope to become some sort of
architect or a technological engineer. As for my senior project, I decided to use my
experience with my architecture elective class for my senior project. Using the Autodesk
Revit program, I designed a floor plan for a residential home. For my official product, I
will present a blueprint for my floor plan.
My blueprint will show the first and second floor plans of the house, and it will
show the placement of appliances, beds and other household items. Along with the floor
plans, you will be able to see several three dimensional views and renderings throughout
my power-point. For my research paper, I chose to research the recent Sub-Prime
Mortgage Crisis and how it could possibly affect the future outlook for an architect.
While the housing market is till diminished, it appears that it may make a substantial
recovery by my expected college graduation (2016). As for my issues throughout the
project, with any computer program there is a possibility of a discrepancy between what
the user wants and what the program is able to provide. In order to make up for this, I had
to use little tips and tricks to make it work for my design. Along with that, there was a
learning curb for me since I just learned to use Revit this year.
The construction of the home is directly related to the job on an architect. While it
may not be up to par with a professional architect, it provides a good introduction to such
a career in the future. The Subprime Mortgage crisis also has a direct relation to the
outlook of an architect’s career. After I put the finishing touches on my house, I think I
learned that I do not like the tedious editing caused by building codes and regulations.
While I still enjoy technological design, I think I would prefer to design household
electronics and such so that I would have more freedom with my designs.
The senior project provided an in depth opportunity for me to truly discover and
develop my interest in architecture. Without it, I may not have ever known my distaste
for some of the more tedious tasks involved with the designing process. Still, even though
I discovered that I do not like architecture as much as I thought, I learned that I still love
the design aspect of a career.
Sincerely,
Brian Elliott
