The Brixton Pound was launched in 2009 to promote local businesses in Brixton and reduce shopping at chain stores. It is one of five local currencies in England and is accepted in over 250 shops and businesses, with more than £120,000 in circulation. The Brixton Pound was initiated by the New Economics Foundation, is supported financially by local businesses and grants, and philosophically by the Transition Town Network, with local community members providing passion and energy for the project.

URBED is a Community Interest Company with a particular focus on urban development and heritage. They have worked with a range of communities that have decided to develop a neighbourhood plan, and in fact wrote the Locality ‘Neighbourhood Plans Roadmap Guide’ (http://planning.communityknowledgehub.org.uk/resource/neighbourhood-plans-roadmap-guide)
URBED is an employee-owned co-operative. The staff is a mix of planners, architects, an economist and a sustainability expert. Marianne is herself an architect. Using two community-led projects in Liverpool, Marianne talked about the tools and approaches that can use to influence development. In one of the projects Marianne was working with the community as a designer. In the other she was a local resident, who happened also to be a designer.

Heston West Big Local
The workshop focused on developing youth engagement strategies. They presented their strategy developed by young people, including case studies of their Big Local Youth Action Team. Their story showed growing the team from 48 to 75 dedicated volunteers over 4 years through diverse activities, events, and opportunities for youth involvement and leadership. They provided a step-by-step guide for engaging local youth through schools, activities/events, and retaining young volunteers through unique opportunities and support. Attendees then participated in an activity to plan an intergenerational community event to further engage youth.

Birchwood Big Local Legacy

Collaboration not conflict

Values should be clearly defined, openly discussed, and referenced regularly to guide decision making and resolve conflicts. Partnerships also benefit from setting standards, responsibilities, and codes of conduct to facilitate open communication and ensure all parties are heard. Preventing issues from arising is better than dealing with conflicts once they emerge. Building understanding and finding the best shared solutions requires ongoing hard work from all involved.
