Doer voice verb
Receiver object subject
3. So, let’s start or discussion. Are you ready?
Voice is the quality of a verb that shows whether
the subjects is the doer or receiver of the action.
Everybody read the definition of Active Voice
The Active Voice
Active voice is used to indicate that the subject of
the sentence is the doer of the action.
Everybody read the definition of Passive Voice.
The Passive Voice
Passive Voice is used to indicate that that the
subject is the receiver instead of being the doer of
the action.
c. Interaction
This time class, I want everybody’s participation
for our discussion to be effective.
Let’s start with the Active Voice. I have here
examples. I want any volunteers from the class to
encircle the subject, underline the verb twice and
the object once.
Active voice:
1) The boy kicked the ball.
2) A studentwrote the winning essay.
3) Alexander GrahamBell invented the
telephone.
4) The chef prepareda delicious meal.
What are the subjects in the sentences?
Correct. Remember class that they are the doers
of the action because they are the subjects.
What are the verbs used?
Very good! Those verbs are transitive verb with
directs objects, thus when the subject of the
sentence does the action and the verb has a direct
object, we say that the verb is in the active voice.
(students do what is told)
(students do what is told)
(students do what is told)
1) The boy kicked the ball.
2) A student wrote the winning
essay.
3) Alexander GrahamBell
invented the telephone.
4) The chef prepareda delicious
meal.
Student, Alexander Graham Bell, Chef
Wrote, invented, prepared
Yes ma’am.
4. Do you get it class?
Let’s proceed to the Passive Voice. I have here
examples.
1) The ball was kicked by the boy.
2) The winning essay was written by a students
3) The telephonewas inventedby Alexander
Graham bell.
4) A delicious meal was preparedby the chef.
In each sentence above, observe that the subjects
are the receiver instead of being the doer of the
action. Note that the form of the verb when the
subjects are the receiver, not the doer of the
action is made up of was+ past participle of the
verb. Thus if the subjects is acted upon, the verb is
in the passive voice.
Changing the voice from active to passive.
Let’s study the changes in the following
sentences:
Active Voice
The mother carried the baby.
Father repaired the old chair.
Sam explored the famous underground
river.
Passive Voice
The baby was carried by the mother.
An old chair was repaired by father.
The famous underground river was
explored by Sam.
