4. Aspects of Verbs
Lesson 1.1 Definition of Aspects of Verbs
A Verb is a word that is used to describe an action, state, or occurrence.
Action words such as: eat, dance and cook are verbs.
There are also verbs that do not express action. These verbs are called verbs of being.
They are forms of the verb be. They are usually used as linking verbs or as helping verbs.
Examples are am, is, was, are, were, taste, look, feel, grow and seem. Verbs change
forms to show the time of action or condition. Hence we have the different aspects of the
verbs.
Aspect has to do with the form or structure of the action happening at any time. Tense
refers to time as in present, past, and future.
Aspect of a Verb is determined by whether the verb expresses a fact, an ongoing action, a
completed action, or the end of an on-going action.
Lesson 1.2 The Simple or Zero Aspect of Verbs
Study the chart that shows the forms and the uses of the simple or zero aspect.
Tense Form Examples/ Uses
Simple Present • base form (plural subject)

subject)

house.
Simple Past • base form + -ed (regular

victims.

Simple Future • will/shall + base form of the
