Pre Requisite Knowledge and Skills:
Multiplying numbers/ Visualizing the volume of solid figures/ finding the area of a rectangle
Competency Addressed/ Specific Objective:Derives the formula in finding the rectangular prism.
Materials needed: Solid figures/ Rectangular prism/ linking cubes
Interdisciplinary: Composition Writing ( English)
Procedure:
Teacher/ Pupils Activities Teacher’s Note
Introduction/ Preliminaries (Engage )
Show filled and empty solid figures. Let the pupils focus on the rectangular prism
Ask them what they have observed
Pose scenario/ problem
which do not have
immediate solution
Problem Posing (Explore)
I have here a rectangular prism which measures 10cm long by 4cm wide by 3cm
high. How many 1 cubic cm do you think can this rectangular prism can hold?
Possible answer and solution
10+10+10+10=40
Layer 1 has 40 small caubes
40+40+40=120
10x 4=40
40x3=120
Development ofconcept: (Explain)
What is the shape of the box? Rectangular Prism
How does the base of the box look? It is a rectangle
What is the length of the rectangle? 10 cm
What is its width? 4 cm
What is its height? 3cm
How many 1 cm cubes are there in the first layer? 40 small cubes or 40 cubic unit
How did you get 40? (we counted or we count by 10 since there are 4 tens so there
are 40 cubic units.
What do you think will you do to 10 and 4 to get 40? Multiply
So what is does 10 again represent? It represent the length of the base or the
rectangular prism.
What does 4 represent? It represents the width….
So what did you do with the length and the width? We multiply
How did you get 120? We multiply 40 by 3 because there are 40 cubic units in the
first layer and there are 3 layers.
What does 3 represents? It represents the height of the rectangular prism.
So how should we solve or what is the formula in finding the volume of the
rectangular prism?
Volume = lxwxh or volume= area of the base x height.
Allow the pupils to
develop their own
procedure of solving the
problem.
Let them explain their
answers. And highlight
the answers to the
concept that the
rectangular prism has a
rectangular base. It has 3
dimensions: Length,
width and height.
After highlighting the
pupils’ answer the
teacher should process
the scenario/ problem to
the math concept.
Process the concept that
volume is the amount of
space that a solid figure
like the rectangular
prism can accommodate
or hold.
Volume of the
rectangular prism can be
solved by multiplying
the length the width and
the height or multiplying
the area of the base and
the height. It is
expressed in cubic units
Practice (Elaborate ) More examples ifneeded
Now I have here a worksheet.
Let us practice if you know already how to find the volume of rectangular prism by
applying the formula you have learned

What have you learned today?
Compose a paragraph on what you have learned today highlighting on how you
derived the formula in finding the volume of a rectangular prism
like cubic meter or cubic
centimeter.

2. A shoe box is 30 cm long, 9 cm wide and 6 cm tall. What is the volume of
the box?

let the pupils reflect on
their answer. Allow

if necessary to deepen
their understanding.

Grade Level: Grade 4 Topic: Volume of Rectangular Prism Pre Requisite Knowledge and Skills: Multiplying numbers/ Visualizing the volume of solid figures/ finding the area of a rectangle Competency Addressed/ Specific Objective:Derives the formula in finding the rectangular prism. Materials needed: Solid figures/ Rectangular prism/ linking cubes Interdisciplinary: Composition Writing ( English) Procedure: Teacher/ Pupils Activities Teacher’s Note Introduction/ Preliminaries (Engage ) Show filled and empty solid figures. Let the pupils focus on the rectangular prism Ask them what they have observed Pose scenario/ problem which do not have immediate solution Problem Posing (Explore) I have here a rectangular prism which measures 10cm long by 4cm wide by 3cm high. How many 1 cubic cm do you think can this rectangular prism can hold? Possible answer and solution 10+10+10+10=40 Layer 1 has 40 small caubes 40+40+40=120 10x 4=40 40x3=120 Development ofconcept: (Explain) What is the shape of the box? Rectangular Prism How does the base of the box look? It is a rectangle What is the length of the rectangle? 10 cm What is its width? 4 cm What is its height? 3cm How many 1 cm cubes are there in the first layer? 40 small cubes or 40 cubic unit How did you get 40? (we counted or we count by 10 since there are 4 tens so there are 40 cubic units. What do you think will you do to 10 and 4 to get 40? Multiply So what is does 10 again represent? It represent the length of the base or the rectangular prism. What does 4 represent? It represents the width…. So what did you do with the length and the width? We multiply How did you get 120? We multiply 40 by 3 because there are 40 cubic units in the first layer and there are 3 layers. What does 3 represents? It represents the height of the rectangular prism. So how should we solve or what is the formula in finding the volume of the rectangular prism? Volume = lxwxh or volume= area of the base x height. Allow the pupils to develop their own procedure of solving the problem. Let them explain their answers. And highlight the answers to the concept that the rectangular prism has a rectangular base. It has 3 dimensions: Length, width and height. After highlighting the pupils’ answer the teacher should process the scenario/ problem to the math concept. Process the concept that volume is the amount of space that a solid figure like the rectangular prism can accommodate or hold. Volume of the rectangular prism can be solved by multiplying the length the width and the height or multiplying the area of the base and the height. It is expressed in cubic units
