Editor's Notes

  • #4 These are the topics I want to finish before the end of the trimester, we will finish them, but depending on the pace, it will depend on the depth
  • #5 Homework will be given a week in advance
  • #6 No late homework, pass in what you have or you will receive a zero 15 assignments, they will be assigned on mondays and be expected to be completed by the following Monday.
  • #7 Quizzes will be given on wednesdays. Material from the homework assignment will be tested, starting with the second week. Excused absences will be allowed retakes. Quizzes will be a review of the material. If you are keeping up and studying, you will be fine.
  • #8 Tentatively, tuesdays will be either in the lab, or be an activity. Before we go into lab we will go over proper procedures and safety.
  • #11 I will go into this a little bit more later, but I am giving you all the due dates, which are also listed on the class website. So this is basically going to be an exercise in writing a real research paper. I will teach you how to structure it, what sources to use, how to cite it, and any other bits and pieces that go with writing a research paper. I want you to start thinking about a topic in chemistry. It can be any topic. Any topic at all, whether it be chemical composition of your iphone screen or how hair dye works. Everything has a chemical aspect to it. When it comes down to it, the entire planet and everything in it is made of 3 things, electrons, protons and neutrons. The goal of this project is going to be to get you to get in the habit of doing scientific research, not just going on wikipedia, though it is a great starting source, or looking at random websites and running into confirmation bias, which is when you think something, and you choose a certain source that agrees with you, so you use it as a citation. It is also to get you to think about the world from a chemistry perspective, as well as practice using the resources you have. It will also be extremely useful for you in other classes, and definitely in college. As you can see, the timeline is nice and spread out, but you do have to keep track, because these due dates will come and go and you will barely notice.
  • #12 It is important to avoid the appearance and the reality of cheating If you look like you are cheating, you probably are.
  • #13 If you have questions, you can email me directly to my email, or you can go on my website and write your question on the site. Generally, if you have a question, the odds are that at least one other person does. You may also write me a note or raise your hand in class.
  • #16 This isn’t a chemistry quiz, but I do expect you to take it seriously. I will be passing around a survey. I want each of you to fill it out honestly
