This document discusses the application of altmetrics at the University of Helsinki's Medical Campus Library. It provides an overview of altmetrics and how they can be used as filters for scholarly literature in addition to traditional metrics like citations and journal impact factors. The document also describes the library's Terkko Altmetrics Process for tracking altmetric data for publications from their academic medical center and making this data visible on their Terkko Navigator platform through embedded metrics, Twitter feeds, and scholar profiles. Players in altmetrics data collection and reporting like ImpactStory and PlumX are also highlighted.

Presentation for the Narma Workshop: An introduction to metrics and their use - turning data into intelligence. http://narma.no/narma-kurs/workshop-an-introduction-to-metrics-and-their-use-turning-data-into-intelligence/
I apply Ranganathan's 5 laws of library science to altmetrics, as part of a holistic research impact support service. I discuss what altmetrics are, what they measure, their uses throughout the research lifecycle, and where you can get them. I then apply Ranganathan's 4th law, saving the time of the user, to the harvesting of altmetrics by research information systems, embedding them at the point of need. The challenge of altmetrics is to change our concept of what an institutional repository is, from a simple container of research outputs to a smart system that harvests and catalogs a much broader range of output and impact data elements.
Joining the ‘buzz’ : the role of social media in raising research visibilityEileen Shepherd
Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics or article level metrics). Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. (Rhodes University is in Grahamstown, South Africa)

I will demonstrate the use of the VOSviewer software (www.vosviewer.com), of which I am one of the developers, for creating bibliometric visualizations of science based on openly available bibliographic data sources. Both the use of Crossref data and the use of data from the OpenCitations Corpus will be demonstrated. In addition, I will show how data from Dimensions can be used. The possibilities and limitations of the currently available open data sources will be discussed, also in comparison with more established data sources such as Web of Science and Scopus. Finally, I will provide my perspective on future developments, focusing especially on the integration of open data sources and visual analysis tools.

From peer reviewed journal articles, to assorted reports and grey literature, to datasets comprising numerical, textual or multimedia files; we generate thousands of research outputs.
In this session, Kirsten Thompson (OD&PL) and Nick Sheppard (Library) will discuss strategies for increasing quality online engagement with that research. We will explore how you can use ‘alternative metrics’, more commonly known as ‘altmetrics’, to monitor such engagement. Altmetrics can help to showcase the reach of your work, supplement grant and tenure applications, identify new audiences, and connect with other researchers in your discipline.
In the age of “fake news”, academics have a responsibility to share their expertise beyond the Ivory Tower. We’ll show you how to ensure all these disparate outputs are properly curated in university repositories with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). There will also be an opportunity to learn about and contribute to the Library led Data Management Engagement Award, a first-ever competition launched to elicit new and imaginative ideas for engaging researchers in the practices of good Research Data Management (RDM).

ALTMETRICS : A HASTY PEEP INTO NEW SCHOLARLY MEASUREMENTSaptarshi Ghosh
The term ‘Altmetrics’ was proposed by Jason Priem, a PhD student at the School of Information and Library Science at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through a tweet. [https://twitter.com/asnpriem/status/25844968813].
Altmetrics is the combination of two words such as: ‘Alternative’ and ‘Metrics’ in which the ‘alt-‘part refers to alternative types of metrics (that is alternative to traditional metrics such as citation analysis, impact factor, downloads & usage data etc.).
Altmetrics is the creation and study of new metrics based on the Social Web for analyzing, and informing scholarship (http://altmetrics.org/about/). It is the study of new indicators for the analysis of academic activity based on Web 2.0.

f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.

• Altmetrics is the study and use of non-traditional scholarly impact
measures that are based on activity in web-based environments. As
scholarship increasingly moves online, these metrics track associated
interactions and activity to generate fine-grained data, allowing
researchers and policy makers to create a higher resolution picture of
the reach and impact of academic research.
• Altmetrics research seeks to build and track a rich, holistic image of
impact on diverse audiences (general public as well as scholars) and
monitors diverse types of engagement with scholarship, including
viewership, discussion, bookmarking, and recommendation, along
with traditional citation.

29. Altmetrics -> Allmetrics (http://blog.impactstory.org/beall-altmetrics/)
• What altmetrics actually measure?
• The point of altmetrics isn’t to measure quality. It’s to better
understand impact: both the quantity of impact and the diverse
types of impact.
• And when we supplement traditional measures of impact like
citations with newer, altmetrics-based measures like post-publication
peer review counts, scholarly bookmarks, etc we have a better picture
of the full extent of impact. Not the only picture. But a better picture.
• Research Impact is multidimensional and it is obvious that no single
metric is sufficient to measure it. Hence, we should positively
welcome altmetrics and work on it to have a wider view of impact.
