About a year ago, a team of paleontologists led by a researcher at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and an adjunct professor at Pitt, published a report of their discovery of a new dinosaur, a bird-like large-bodied oviraptorosaurian theropod. The paper was published in PLoSOne, and here’s the record as it appears in our institutional repository.
  6. The same day, National Geographic featured this discovery as the “Chicken from Hell”
  7. It was picked up by CNN the next day,
  8. And also featured on NPR’s Morning Edition
  9. And by looking at the PlumX widget in the institututional repository, we can see not only the scientific interest in this discovery but the social impact of this discovery and how it captured the imagination of the general public. These are insights we simply would not have been able to quantify before altmetrics.
  10. Delayed, incomplete, weakly described information – strategies/decisions are not as smart/effective as they could be.
  11. Each year, OCTRI awards pilot project funding to exceptional clinical and translational research projects. This year, OCTRI joined with strategic partners to leverage resources and offer awards in targeted areas like primate research and community-based participatory research.
