Length Frequency Distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) (Lecepede, 1803) (Chrysichthys, Bagridae) from Itu Head Brigde, in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
The length frequency distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) was investigated using 496 specimens between June, 2012 to January, 2013 and these specimens were obtained from the artisanal catches landed at Itu Head Brigde, Cross River System. The highest frequency distribution occurrence 38 (Number) throughout the study period was recorded in the month of September, 2012. The length-frequency distribution throughout the study period shows a prominent peak with a preponderance total length range of 40-49cm over others except for January, 2013 which the prominent peak with a prepondence total length range of 50-59cm over others. During the study period, it was observed that the length distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) could have management implication for resource sustainability. However, further research is needed in this area using selective gears to determine and establish the true picture of the length frequency distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) in Itu Head Bridge, Cross River system.

During a fish survey from 2016 to 2017, we captured 83 specimens of the cyprinid fish, Carasobarbus sublimus from the Al-Diwaniya River, Middle Euphrates, Iraq. This is the first report of the occurrence of this species in this locality. Fish were captured by gill nets and electro-fishing equipment. Twenty two morphometric and eleven meristic measurements were applied to describe the species. The range of total length in the present specimens (130.4-250.1mm) is larger than the range quoted for C. sublimus. The indices characters to standard length (SL) varied from 7.4 % to 121.0 %, and the head characters to head length (HL) from 27.4% to 93.2%. The growth rate between body characters and SL varied from 0.085 to 1.118 and between head characters and HL from 0.210 to 1.091.The numbers of scales in lateral line and around the least circumference of the caudal peduncle are 27-29 and 12, respectively. The biometric data were successful in identifying of C. sublimus and confirm the presence of the species in the Al-Diwaniya River. This is the second record of the species in the Iraqi freshwaters. Based on this finding, the case would be interesting and open to discussion about the distributions of C. sublime in the Tigris-Euphrates basin.

A total of 305 specimens of P.jubelini were purchased from local fisher-folks on landing sites at different locations within the Lagos lagoon ( Majidun, Makoko, Ibese, Bayeiku) from January 2012 to June 2012 and used for this study. Their Total length ranging from 12cm to 29.5cm and body weight ranged from 21.3g to 367g. The frequency distribution showed a polymodal distribution of P.jubelini. The size class of 18.0cm to 20.9cm (TL) was more abundant. The length weight relationship was determined by regression coefficient equation Log W= -1.8357+2.9628LogL (n =305, r = 0.9213). P.jubelini showed negative allometric growth (b= 2.96). The mean condition factor 1.31, indicates that P.jubelini were in good condition in the lagoon. The result from this study is relevant for fishery management and stock assessment studies of P.jubelini from the Lagos lagoon.

This study was aimed to discover the species diversity level of demersal fish resources in spatial distribution and its relation to the environment. The study was conducted in May and June 2015 by operating a trawl in the assigned stations. The spatial distribution was based on the Bray-Curtis index which divided the distribution of demersal fish resources into three clusters. Inshore sites of Kalimantan’s western waters (KLBR) was dominated by Leognathidae, inshore sites of the eastern of Riau Islands waters (KPRI) was dominated by Lutjanidae, and offshore sites of the southern of South China Sea (SSCS) was dominated by Nemipteridae. Offshore sites of the southern of South China Sea (SSCS) had a much better community stability level than that of inshore sites of Kalimantan’s western waters (KLBR) and inshore sites of the eastern of Riau Islands waters (KPRI). This study also demonstrated that environmental factors such as depth, sediment type, salinity, and temperature, affect the distribution and species diversity of demersal fish communities in the southern of South China Sea.

Fisheries management and conservation studies require the quantitative descriptions of general well-being for the commercially important fishes. Pomfrets are one of commercially important species in the Bay of Bengal and studies on general well-being are still unavailable. The present study was conducted to know the general contentment of two commercially pomfret species Pampus argenteus and Parastromateus niger by studying the length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (K), relative condition factor (Kn), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) throughout the year. The LWR of P. argenteus and P. niger showed a negative allometric growth pattern in both sexes. The K was found to vary throughout the year for P. argenteus and P. niger but no significant differences were observed between months. The Kn was highest in rainy and summer season in P. argenteus and P. niger respectively. The highest GSI was observed in May and March for P. argenteus and P. niger respectively with concomitant increase of HSI value. The second minor peak in GSI was also observed in October indicating a probability of the second phase of spawning. This preliminary information will assist in the successful conservation and management measures of pomfrets in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh.

A possible MLS restriction was proposed for common dab (Limanda limanda) by determining age at length, and estimating growth parameters and length at first maturity. Individuals were collected in the Northumberland coastal waters, within the Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NIFCA) area of jurisdiction (<6 nm offshore) by using three different fishing gears including demersal otter trawl, beam trawl and trammel nets. Otoliths were extracted for age determination and growth was described by applying the standard form of the von Bertalanffy growth equation to the mean lengths at age.

The Cushing's triangle on fish migration explains various life cycle activities from recruitment to fishing as governed by physical oceanographic processes. The role of currents in a closed area such as Gulf of Kachchh (GoK) and geological structures such as mounts in an open area such as Mangalore coast is explored to see the role of fish aggregation creating fishing and nursery grounds. Numerical and particle transport models was used for generating hydrodynamics and further for identifying areas of fish aggregation. Validations of the models were done with insitu observations. Likelihood retention areas of larval aggregations indicated formation of nursery grounds. <br />Oceanographic processes such as fronts, eddies, meanders, rings etc and primary productivity linked to them are keys to identification of Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ). Altimeter satellite remote sensing data could identify mesoscale features (Eddies). Such data products can supplement the SST-Ocean color based PFZ and provide information in cloudy conditions too. Data collected from 454 commercial fishing trips in the Andaman Sea along with maps of sea level anomaly and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) global level 3 mapped thermal IR daytime sea surface temperature (SST) from Aqua and Terra satellite were used for the study. <br />Productive habitats and their vulnerability can also be assessed using the satellite data based oceanographic processes. The paper looks into the various case studies carried out in tropical marine conditions.

Population structure, fecundity and morphological characteristics of M. vollenhovenii were studied around Lower Volta River, Ghana subject to dirt of information on this prawn species around the study location. The most prominent morphological characteristics already documented for identification of this species was rostrum bearing 13-15 continuous teeth dorsally and 4-5 teeth on its ventral part. These morphological traits formed the principal components for identification in this study. Results showed that morphological traits on second pereiopods such as presence of spines, spinules, teeth borne within the fingers, and dense projections of setae-like features on telson and uropod were observed relevant for identification purposes. Other results revealed that maximum total length recorded in this study (150-155mm) was higher than total length ranges (≤125mm) documented for this species in earlier studies. Consequently, two adult’s classes of prawns were identified (old adult class 81-120mm; and young adults 31-80mm) and older class was observed to be more in catches than the younger prawns. Absolute fecundity revealed that oocytes estimation varied with respect to seasons, ages of prawns and body sizes of specimens examined. In conclusion, this study observed that M. vollenhovenii fishery is operating in a sustainable manner at the time of this study around the study location.

Population dynamics of 15 fish species in Grand-Lahou lagoon (West Africa, Cô...Open Access Research Paper
This study described growth, mortality, recruitment patterns and exploitation rates of 15 fish species in Grand-Lahou lagoon (Côte d’Ivoire). Monthly length-frequency data collected from artisanal fisheries from November 2013 to October 2014 were analyzed with FiSAT software using the ELEFAN package to estimate the population parameters of fishes. Asymptotic values for total length (L∞) ranged from 15.75 cm for Synodontis schall to 59.80 cm for Trachinotus teraia. Growth rate (k) varied from 0.19 for Coptodon guineensis to 0.98 for Caranx hippos. The growth performance index estimates were close to the values found by other authors for most of the fish species. The total mortality (Z) high values were recorded for Synodontis schall (Z= 4.15 year-1; M = 2.50 year-1) Schilbe mandibularis (Z= 2.19 year-1; M=1.33 year-1). Fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) were found to be less than the optimum levels of exploitation for most fish species. The exploitation rate (E) was higher than the maximum sustainable yield (Emax) for Caranx hippos and higher than E0.5 for Eucinostomus melanopterus, Elops lacerta and Synodontis schall. Recruitment was noted as year-round and bimodal for most studied populations. These results demonstrate that some fish stocks necessitate effective management measures particularly C. hippos, E. melanopterus, E. lacerta and S. schall.

sampling operations was done within 24 hours. Sampling and catching was done in Khuzestan and Bushehr waters in fall and winter of 2011and since the third week of September 2012 sampling was done in Hormozgan
and Sistan and Baloochestan waters. All thefish were identified and their otolith was extracted to verify them.

Age, growth, length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (K) and relative condition factor (Kn) were investigated for the annular seabream Diplodus annularis collected from non-commercial catches around the Maltese Islands between July 2012 and December 2017 (N=1661). The age distribution of the specimens was found to range between 0+ and 17+ years with a positive allometric growth. Average Kn was found to be 1.03 in males and 0.99 in females. The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were: L∞=21.38, K=0.123year-1 and tₒ = -5.40year for all individuals (males, females, hermaphrodites and unsexed). This study is the first reference for D. annularis on the length weight equation parameters, condition factor, relative condition factor and age around the Maltese Islands and establishes a new maximum of 17 years.
Bio-economic analysis of ESBN fishery of Kumira, the coastal area of Chittago...AbdullaAlAsif1
The present investigation was conducted from May to December 2005 at Kumira, the representative area of Chittagong coast for bio-socioeconomic analysis of ESBN fishery. In catch composition of Kumira, it was observed that finfish occupied 77.03 %, shrimp 19.82 % and crab 3.15 % and the average catch per boat per day were found 16.6 kg in Kumira. The highest total catch per boat per day (50 kg) was found in October at Kumira. The lowest catch was found (2 kg) in August at Kumira. The average total catch per landing center per month was found 14805 kg at Kumira. The average catch per fishermen per day was found 3.39 kg at Kumira and the average cost per boat per month was about 7,813 Tk in the study area. Average sale per month was found over 18,713 Tk in Kumira. During the month July and August most of the fishermen were engaged in Hilsa fishing with the Hilsa gill net resulting the total catch was with ESBN lowest in those months.

Diversity and Richness of Ciconiiformes Species in Badagry Wetland Southweste...BRNSS Publication Hub
We examined the richness and diversity Ciconiiformes species in Badagry wetland southwestern Nigeria. Point count method was used to collect data on the richness and diversity of Ciconiiformes in the study area. Counting bands of the 50 m radius were used for all the stations. The minimum distance between two counting stations was 200 m, and 25 stations were used for this study. On arrival at the sites, birds were allowed time to settle before recording all the birds seen or heard for a predetermined time 20 min. From the result obtained, it indicates that the study area is rich Ciconiiformes species. A total of 16 Ciconiiformes species belonging to four families were recorded in the study area. The family Ardeidae has the highest number of bird species (11), this is followed by Ciconiidae family (3), Threskiornithidae and Scopidae families have one bird species each. The Shannon H index revealed that dry season (2.153) was lower than a wet season (2.357); this was based on the data collected during the period of the research study. From the result obtained of the relative abundance of bird species in the study area, it was revealed that the following four bird species Ardea cinerea, Ardea melanocephala, Scopus umbretta, and Bostrychia hagedash have the highest relative (4.44) individual bird species per square kilometer within the study area.
In order to assess the Myxosporeans fauna of Cameroon fresh water fishes so
as to find the fight strategies, 655 specimens (350 Oreochromis niloticus and 305
Barbus callipterus) were sampled in Mapé river (Sanaga basin) and examined.
Standard methods were used for the sampling of fishes, conservation and microscopy.
Morphometric characteristics of the spores were used for species identification. Two
new species belonging to the genus Myxobolus Büstchli, 1882 were described namely
Myxobolus tchoumbouei n. sp in Barbus callipterus which formed cysts within various
organs (fins, skin and operculum); Myxobolus mapei n. sp parasite of kidneys and liver
in Oreochromis niloticus and Barbus callipterus. Myxobolus tchoumbouei exhibited
very long spores (19.19 x 8.89 μm), pear-shaped with rounded anterior end
sometimes flattened. Polar capsules were dissymmetrical. They measured 7.60 x 3.00
μm for the bigger and 7.06 x 2.62 μm for the smaller. Myxobolus mapei n. sp had
ellipsoidal spores (13.50 x 6.83 μm) with unequal polar capsules. The larger polar
capsule (6.44 X 2.88 μm) was about 1.5 times longer than the smaller one (4.13 X 1.61
μm) and filled half of the spiral cavity. The awareness about these parasites is useful
to find fighting strategies.
Size distribution and biometric relationships of little tunny Euthynnus allet...inventy
This study is taken from data of commercial fishing of the little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus (Rafinesque, 1810) caught in the Algerian coast, sampled between november 2011 and april 2016. Data were collected in order to determine size distributions of the population and biometric relationships of species including the size - weight relationships. A total of 601 fish ranged from 30.9 and 103 cm fork length (FL) were observed. The size distribution of Euthynnus alletteratus shows multiple modal values witch the most important cohort corresponds to the age class 2 (42-46 cm). The value of the allometric coefficient (b) of the FL/TW relationship is lower than 3, indicating a negative allometric growth.
Evaluation of the oyster farming potential of the Cintra bay (southern Morocco)Origins publication
The bay of Cintra is a marine ecosystem located in the southern Moroccan Atlantic known for its
biological richness and therefore for its high fishery productivity. This bay was chosen as a new destination for the
development of aquaculture in the southern regions of Morocco. To highlight its potential in terms of oyster
farming, a first rearing trial of triploid cupped oysters (Crassostrea gigas) as well as parallel monitoring of the
phytoplankton population and ecological parameters were undertaken. The results obtained showed that the oysters
adapt well to the conditions of the new environment where mortality was negligible, or even absent after a month
of launching. In terms of biological performance, the growth of individuals is continuous during the annual cycle
and after eight months the weight could reach 30.5 g which is a minimum weight for marketing. The AFNOR and
Lawrence and Scott indices showed a good physiological state and a better commercial quality of the oysters. The
filling rate of these oysters, with an average weight of 39.7g when lifting, is very high according to the Lawrence and
Scott index (126.3) and the average AFNOR index (around 21.8) rank them in the “Special” category.

The length-weight relationship, condition factor and proportionality index of Callinectes amnicola and Cardisoma armatum from Ebrié Lagoon, Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, were studied. The carapace width and length were measured to the nearest millimeter (mm) while weight was measured to the nearest grams (g). The length-weight relationship of all samples collected were determined for the various sexes and mixed populations. The values of the exponent ‘b’ for all the sexes and mixed populations ranged from 2.01-2.69. The growth generally exhibited negative allometry in all the sexes and mixed populations. The proportionality index showed that Cardisoma armatum was longer and Callinectes amnicola was wider.

Abstract: The length frequency distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) was investigated using 496 specimens between June, 2012
to January, 2013 and these specimens were obtained from the artisanal catches landed at Itu Head Brigde, Cross River System. The
highest frequency distribution occurrence 38 (Number) throughout the study period was recorded in the month of September, 2012. The
length-frequency distribution throughout the study period shows a prominent peak with a preponderance total length range of 40-49cm
over others except for January, 2013 which the prominent peak with a prepondence total length range of 50-59cm over others. During
the study period, it was observed that the length distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) could have management implication for
resource sustainability. However, further research is needed in this area using selective gears to determine and establish the true picture
of the length frequency distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) in Itu Head Bridge, Cross River system.

1. Introduction
(Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) (Lacepede 1802) is a common
silver coloured African catfish occurring in Nigeria and
several West African countries. It is a highly valuable fish
species amongst the indigenous African populations.
Considerations for the culture of the fish have resulted in
several biological studies on the growth and fecundity of the
fish species [1]. The emanating need to culture fishes for
protein consumption for the teeming rapidly growing
populations in the developing countries have made it
necessary to intensify studies on the length frequency fauna
of the African freshwater fishes [1]. (Chrysichthys
nigrodigitatus) is important both in ecological and
economical terms, playing salient role in determining the
dynamics and structure of aquatic ecosystem and is valued as
food for man; serving as delicacy for many low income
earners as it is cherished for its taste and affordable price [2].
Some documented studies on various aspects of
(Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) in Nigeria and worldwide are
works done by [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11] for
Mugil cephalus in bonny estuary, Nigeria. [12] for mullet in
New Calabar River, for Nigerian coastal waters and [13]
reported on Chrysichthys species from the Southern-most
part of the river Nile, Egypt. Length frequency distribution
measurements are fundamental to many aspects of fisheries
science. The required precision of length sample depends on
the purpose of the sampling. But regardless of the type of
assessment that is used, the shape of the length frequency is
of interest, rather than simple summary of statistics such as
mean or variance [14]. Length frequency distribution of any
fish is important to know the status of the size structure of
that fish population in nature. It is the first step to evaluate
gear selectivity of catches made by different kinds of gear
fished in the same water [15]. One of the most commonly
used methods in the analysis of Fisheries data is length-
weight relationship [16]. Length frequency distribution data
for fresh water and brackish water fish resources of Nigeria
are limited and the present contribution is aimed at
compensating for this. Also, the fact that these fish species
(Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) is in high demand in the
country, the use of length frequency distribution for
assessment of their maturity, growth and production is
important. The fishery resource in the Itu Head Bridge, Cross
River System is exploited in a subsistent artisanal manner,
being characterized by the use of different types of traditional
fishing gear such as pipe and drum traps (elongated
cylindrical metal that is completely sealed at one end with a
valve like cap at the other end), gill and cast nets, while the
craft in use is an unmotorized dugout canoe and paddle [17].
Itu Head Bridge, Cross River System artisanal fisheries
dependent on the fish resource of (Chrysichthys
nigrodigitatus) which is their major resource. The livelihood
of artisanal fisherman therefore depends on the continual
availability of the river resources [17]. The purpose of this
research work was to investigate the length frequency
distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) in the Itu Head
Bridge, Cross River System with the view of obtaining
information required for scientific management of this
resource.
2. Materials and Methods
This study was carried out at in Itu Head Bridge between
Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State between latitude

14’30’’N and longitude 80
6’0’’E. It is very close to
Ayadehe located in Itu Local Government. It is a distance of
about 57km from Calabar, Cross River State. The vegetation
is rain forest which comprises of amphibious mangrove
system such as a (Rhizophora racemose). The mangrove

system serves as a spawing and feeding ground for Shrimps
and (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus). Climate of the study area
is defined by dry season and wet season, the wet season
(April-October) is characterized by high precipitation. While
dry season (November-March) is marked low precipitation.
Fishing, aggregate mining, petty trading and farming have
remained the traditional occupation of the people.

Fish samples for this study were collected from month of
June, 2012 to the month of January, 2013, from the fish depot
at Ayadehe community located in Itu Head Bridge Akwa
Ibom State. These samples were always brought from the
artisanal fishermen early in the morning between 7am and
8am. As the landed from their fishing ground samples
collected includes lives as well as dead but fresh individuals.
Identification of fish species (Chyriscthtyes nigrodigitatus)
was done insitu using identification guide of Fresh water
fishes of Nigeria [18]. Measurement of length was taken to
the nearest 0.1cm using a fish measuring board. The total
length of the fish (TL) is measured as the distance from the
tip of the snout of the fish, with the mouth closed, to the tip
of the longest caudal fin ray while the standard length (SL) is
taken as the distance from the tip of the snout of the fish,
with the mouth closed, to the end of the caudal peduncle [9].
The data from samplings were grouped into length classes of
10cm interval for subsequent analysis. A graph of Bar Chart
were plotted using Microsoft excel to show the variation of
length frequency distribution of (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus)
in each of the months throughout the study period.
3. Results
The length frequency distribution of (Chyriscthtys
nigrodigitatus) throughout the Study period is shown in
Figure, 2. The total length throughout the Study period range
from 9.0-109.0cm. Grouped data show variation of length in
the month of June, 2012 between 9.0-109.0cm with the
highest frequency occurrence of 22 (40-49cm) and lower
frequency occurrence of 0 (0-9cm) (Figure 2). Grouped data

between 9.0-109.0cm, with the highest frequency occurrence
of 22 (60-69cm) and lower frequency occurrence of 0 (0-9;
10-19; 20-29cm) respectively (Figure, 2). Grouped data show

(40-49cm) and lower frequency occurrence of 0 (0-9; 10-

4. Discussion
The length frequency distribution is useful in the
determination of age and growth. The length composition of
a population often exhibits modes among fishes with short
spawning season and a rapid and uniform growth, from
which the modal length of the first few age groups can be
easily determined [15]. (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) though
has short spawning season [19]. The result obtained for
length-frequency distribution did not give any tangible

information since the modes were not pronounced among the
young ones. This is expected since out of 496 specimens used
in this study, only 187 specimens were below 20cm total
length and this may be explained as being due to the fishing
gears used in collecting the specimens which may be said to
be biased particularly for fish above 20cm total length. These
showed that even though there were corresponding increase
in length, at certain stages of the fish growth, increase in
length were no longer directly proportional to the length
frequency distribution as served in some fish species, this
finding was also observed by [20].
5. Conclusion
It could be concluded that during the study period, it was
observed that the length distribution of (Chrysichthys
nigrodigitatus) could have management implication for
resource sustainability. However, further research is needed
in this area using selective gears to determine and establish
the true picture of the length frequency distribution of
(Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) in Itu Head Bridge, Cross River
system.
