This document traces the evolution of social media and user-generated content from early bulletin board systems (BBS) to modern platforms. It discusses how BBS allowed users to communicate, share information, and interact online in the 1980s. Blogs emerged in the late 1990s as online diaries that became popular ways to publish content. Factors like simplified publishing tools, affordable electronics, and broadband internet helped blogs flourish in the early 2000s. Today's social media builds on these foundations by facilitating participatory sharing and user-centered design through platforms like social networks, wikis, and video/image sharing sites. The shift from a "read-only" Web 1.0 to a more conversational Web 2.0 empower

Smart cities: how computers are changing our world for the betterRoberto Siagri
Introduction
The world is flat, hot and crowded, as Thomas Friedman says in his last book. Luckily, we can also say that it is getting more and more intelligent. Our world is increasingly interconnected and increasingly able to talk to us: people, systems and objects can communicate and interact with one another in completely new ways. Now we have the means to measure, hear and see instantaneously the state of all things. When all things, including processes and working methods, are intelligent, we will be able to respond to changing conditions with more speed and more focus, and make more precise forecasting which in turn will lead to optimization of future events. This ongoing transformation has given birth to the concept of Smart Cities, cities that are able to take action and improve the quality of life of their inhabitants, reconciling it with the needs of trades, factories, service industries and institutions by means of an innovative and pervasive use of digital technologies.

2) Show how a social network resonates as a model for associations and their goals
3) Look at how private and public social networks can become a threat to an association, with examples
4) Cover using a private social network for an association and how to get the best from it
5) Show how to use the best of both (private & public social networks)
Case studies from outside of the membership sector will include:

The History of Social Media Marketing SuiteSimplify360
The Emergence of open and flexible Social Networks like Facebook and Twitter, and their willingness to keep the APIs open gave rise to huge market for Social Media Marketing Platforms. Several companies are in the race for Web Marketing Domination and the angle of Social Marketing Suite is getting huge prominence. In such a case, it is important to understand the history that led to the emergence of Social Media Marketing Suite.
This presentation was researched and developed to introduce the small businesses and not for profits that the idea of social media is not a new fad. My goal was to break down any preconceived notions about the power of Social Media today and in the future.

This is a short presentation to get you thinking about the effect social media has on women's choices for birth and midwifery practice. To be honest, I'm left with more questions than answers and recommend that research is carried out in this area to see exactly if and how social media supports childbirth
I was talking to a few businesses and realized that even when they are doing a lot of B2C, and > S$20MM in revenue, they are still not on social media. So this is a simple introduction on why you should get on social media. (Updated since 2 years back)
State of the Media: Social Media Report Q3
Social media's popularity continues to grow, connecting people with just about everything they watch and buy.
The latest Nielsen insights provide some answers on exactly how powerful this influence is on consumer behavior, both online and off.
The value of the time consumers spend online and on social networks and blogs continues to grow, most visible through the influence on purchase decisions. For instance, 60 percent of people who use three or more digital means of research for product purchases learned about a specific brand or retailer from a social networking site.
As the influence of social media – and those using social media – continues to grow, it’s crucial for traditional media, retailers, brands and advertisers to understand how different consumer segments use and share content. Nielsen’s “State of the Media: The Social Media Report – Q3 2011” presents a snapshot of the current social media landscape and audiences in the U.S. and other major markets.
About the World Wide Web. In brief, how it was concieved, how it began, where do we stand, how it will shape in coming years, and a conclusion.

"Web 3.0" - the next generation of the web, powered by blockchain technology. Web 3.0 is changing everything. From a more personal experience, to the democratization of ideas, to the way information is disseminated, this new age is already underway. The web is evolving rapidly. We’re already seeing the beginning of an entirely new web, where we will be able to build applications and run apps directly on the web. With web 3.0, we can create entire apps without having to go through the app stores. There are already several major players trying to figure out what web 3.0 will look like. But with the rise of the decentralized internet, we may not see a clear vision for the future of the web until it’s too late. In this article, I will explain what web 3.0 will look like, what it’s about, and how you can benefit from it.
The evolution of the web which started from web 1.0, web 2.0 and web 3.0. What is Web 3.0 advantage for the future? Actually it is beyond web 2.0 that capable of interacting with machine, data and very smart system which utilize Artificial Intelligence and blockchain technologies.
2. What is Social Media?
It is Media for Social Interaction; using accessible
and scalable techniques and technologies to turn
communication into interactive dialogue.
Social Media builds on the ideological and
technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows
the creation and exchange of user-generated
content.
4. “Web 2.0”
In 1999, Darcy DiNucci coined “Web 2.0” in Fragmented Future:
“The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially
static screen-fulls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first
glimmerings of Web 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just
beginning to see how that embryo might develop. The Web will be
understood not as screen-fulls of text and graphics, but as a transport
mechanism, the ether through which interactivity happens. It will
appear on your car dashboard...your cell phone...hand held game
machines...maybe even your microwave oven.”
Darcy DiNucci - a consultant on electronic information design.
5. Web 2.0: a Basic Definition
“Web 2.0 is associated with web
applications that facilitate participatory
information sharing, interoperability,
user-centered design, and collaboration
on the World Wide Web.”
- Wikipedia
6. Web 2.0: the Definition Defined
In Layman's terms:
Web 2.0 sites allow users to interact and
collaborate with each other as creators of
their own content* in a virtual community.
*This is in contrast to websites where users are limited to the
passive viewing of content that was created for them.
8. The Shift to a Conversational Web
A way to think about social media and Web 2.0,
compared with the “read-only” Web that came before it.

10. We, the users, began using the web in a new way.
In the mid-1980’s, tech geeks developed hobbyist run
mini-networks, known as “bulletin board systems”
or a BBS.
How did we shift from Web 1.0 to 2.0?
12. What was a BBS?
Computer software that allowed users to connect and login
to the system using a terminal program.
Once logged in, a user could perform functions:
i.e. upload and download software and data, read news and
bulletins, and exchange messages with other users, either
through electronic mail or in public message boards.

15. Blogs [Web Logs]
Emerged out of online diaries of the
mid-90’s.
1999
Blogger and LiveJournal, the first
commercial blogging services, were released.
2002
From here onward, blogs made serious inroads and
rose in popularity for the next few years.
16. Tech changes that drove blog explosion:
● Simplified web publishing tools
● Fall of prices on consumer electronics
● Mass adoption of affordable home broadband
Internet
These changes made creating and
managing websites easier.

20. For this Course
➔ 65% of your final mark is the writing of
6 cogent blog posts.
➔ You can edit entries throughout the semester.
➔ Pick a “beat” (niche) to blog about. Example:
◆ “The Book of Awesome” = Awesome occurrences.
◆ “Julie and Julia” = Julie’s journal on Julia’s recipes.
◆ “Stuff White People Like” = Stuff white people like.

25. Jeff Jarvis Case Study
June 21, 2005 - Dell lies. Dell sucks
“I just got a new Dell laptop and paid a fortune for the four-year, in-home
service. The machine is a lemon and the service is a lie. I'm having all
kinds of trouble with the hardware: overheats, network doesn't work,
maxes out on CPU usage. It's a lemon.
But what really irks me is that they say if they sent someone to my home --
which I paid for -- he wouldn't have the parts, so I might as well just send
the machine in and lose it for 7-10 days -- plus the time going through this
crap. So I have this new machine and paid for them to FUCKING FIX IT IN
MY HOUSE and they don't and I lose it for two weeks. DELL SUCKS. DELL
LIES. Put that in your Google and smoke it, Dell.”
26. ● Technology sparked the blog revolution, BUT, technology
has never been the driving force behind online social
interaction.
● BBSs, to chat rooms, forums, and blogs. Human Nature is
at the heart of creating and building online
communities.
● From the very beginning of computer networking, the Web
has been a place for social interaction. That's why we call
it social media.
Human Nature, not just Technology
