Part 1: Create a Learning Guide
Module Readings/Resources Discussions Assignments
Module 1:
Career Exploration
- Content from aptitude tests
- Content from Career
Exploration websites and
Bureau of Labor Statistics
- Share with the class what careers caught
their attention and why? What are the top
3 career fields of interest after this unit?
- Research and explore careers of
interest and list top personal choices
- Identify requirements for such
careers
Module 2:
SAT/ACT/Standardized
Placement Tests
- Content from the SAT website
- Content from the ACT website
- Content regarding Smarter
Balance Tests
- A sort of journal entry from all students
sharing which tests they will be taking and
why
- An open forum for students to share and
discuss challenges they face
- Students will be asked to look up
test dates, locations, practice
questions, study resources and tips
Module 3:
FAFSA/ORSAA
- Content from FAFSA and OSAC
- This will not be an open discussion module.
- This will be more of a discussion with the
instructor for support with the applications
and understanding the applications.
- The students will need to self-
identify what application is most
appropriate for them.
- They will need to prove they have at
least started the application.
Module 4:
OSAC
- Video explaining how OSAC
works
- Open discussion regarding challenges with
the application or specific scholarships, for
support from peers and instructor
- Opportunity for students to share short
essays for peer review and editing
- Begin OSAC application and identify
applications to apply for
- Write at least a first draft for each
short essay question
Module 5:
Oregon Promise
- Content from OSAC and
potentially a video about how
the Oregon Promise works
- Only discussion with instructor for support
- Complete the Oregon Promise
Application
Module 6:
College Exploration and
College Admission Applications
- Content from Common App
- Examples of College
Applications
- Video Tutorial and
walkthrough of what to look
for on College websites
- Share with the class the top 4 colleges of
your choice and why
- College admissions worksheet
identifying degree programs,
admission requirements, deadlines,
etc.
Part 2: Course Expectations:
Guidelines for success in this course:
1) Follow the timeline and consecutive order of the assignments and modules, most of them are designed to build on previous knowledge or
requirements.
2) Communicate with me if you have questions or concerns regarding applications for OSAC, FAFSA/ORSAA, Oregon Promise, Admissions, etc. I
will not know how or when to help you if you do not communicate your need s with me.
3) Read your peers’ posts in the forums and share your thoughts with them.
4) Because this course is meant to walk you through your preparation for college or career-related programs, you may need support from your
parents with some applications such as FAFSA and ORSAA. Make sure they understand this and that they can contact me with questions,
comments, or concerns as well.
5) Take every assignment seriously and think deeply about where you’d like to see yourself in the future and how you plan to get there.
6) Do not be critical or judgmental of your peers’ interests; you are in this course to explore your options and support each other.
What you may expect from me during this course:
1) Feedback for each assignment from all modules.
2) Support when you have technical or general questions regarding any assignments, modules, or topics in this course.
3) Confidentiality and trust with sensitive information. I will not nor do I have any interest in sharing with others any information that you
share with me regarding your applications (i.e. family income, immigration status, GPA, career interests, etc.)
4) Responses to your e-mails or phone calls within 36 hours.

García Dr. Mary Bucy CSE 616 LEARNING GUIDE Part 1: Create a Learning Guide Module Readings/Resources Discussions Assignments Module 1: Career Exploration - Content from aptitude tests - Content from Career Exploration websites and Bureau of Labor Statistics - Share with the class what careers caught their attention and why? What are the top 3 career fields of interest after this unit? - Research and explore careers of interest and list top personal choices - Identify requirements for such careers Module 2: SAT/ACT/Standardized Placement Tests - Content from the SAT website - Content from the ACT website - Content regarding Smarter Balance Tests - A sort of journal entry from all students sharing which tests they will be taking and why - An open forum for students to share and discuss challenges they face - Students will be asked to look up test dates, locations, practice questions, study resources and tips Module 3: FAFSA/ORSAA - Content from FAFSA and OSAC - This will not be an open discussion module. - This will be more of a discussion with the instructor for support with the applications and understanding the applications. - The students will need to self- identify what application is most appropriate for them. - They will need to prove they have at least started the application. Module 4: OSAC - Video explaining how OSAC works - Open discussion regarding challenges with the application or specific scholarships, for support from peers and instructor - Opportunity for students to share short essays for peer review and editing - Begin OSAC application and identify applications to apply for - Write at least a first draft for each short essay question Module 5: Oregon Promise - Content from OSAC and potentially a video about how the Oregon Promise works - Only discussion with instructor for support - Complete the Oregon Promise Application Module 6: College Exploration and College Admission Applications - Content from Common App - Examples of College Applications - Video Tutorial and walkthrough of what to look for on College websites - Share with the class the top 4 colleges of your choice and why - College admissions worksheet identifying degree programs, admission requirements, deadlines, etc.

Part 2: Course Expectations: Guidelines for success in this course: 1) Follow the timeline and consecutive order of the assignments and modules, most of them are designed to build on previous knowledge or requirements. 2) Communicate with me if you have questions or concerns regarding applications for OSAC, FAFSA/ORSAA, Oregon Promise, Admissions, etc. I will not know how or when to help you if you do not communicate your need s with me. 3) Read your peers’ posts in the forums and share your thoughts with them. 4) Because this course is meant to walk you through your preparation for college or career-related programs, you may need support from your parents with some applications such as FAFSA and ORSAA. Make sure they understand this and that they can contact me with questions, comments, or concerns as well. 5) Take every assignment seriously and think deeply about where you’d like to see yourself in the future and how you plan to get there. 6) Do not be critical or judgmental of your peers’ interests; you are in this course to explore your options and support each other. What you may expect from me during this course: 1) Feedback for each assignment from all modules. 2) Support when you have technical or general questions regarding any assignments, modules, or topics in this course. 3) Confidentiality and trust with sensitive information. I will not nor do I have any interest in sharing with others any information that you share with me regarding your applications (i.e. family income, immigration status, GPA, career interests, etc.) 4) Responses to your e-mails or phone calls within 36 hours.
