Nature of Learning
Meaning
Learning is the key process in human
behaviour . It refers to a spectrum of changes that
takes place as a result of one’s experience. The
individual is constantly interacting with and
influenced by the environment. This experience
makes him to change or modify his behaviour in
order to deal effectively with it. Therefore, learning
is a change in behaviour,influenced by previous
behaviour.
SELFLEARNING
Self learning method is an individual method of learning, which
involves studying without direct supervision or attendance in a
classroom. This type of teaching-learning-evaluation all happens
without face-to-face interaction.
 In diagnosing their learning needs,
 Formulating learning goals,
 Identify human and material appropriate learning strategies
 Choosing and implement appropriate learning strategies,
 Evaluating learning outcomes.
FOUR STAGES OF SELF LEARNING
 Being ready to learn
 Setting learning goals
 Engaging in the learning process
 Evaluating learning students
BEING READY TO LEARN
This step requires time for analysing a
student’s current situation, study habits,
family situation and support network both at
school and at home. Signs of readiness for
self-directed learning include being;
autonomous, organised, self disciplined, able
to communicate effectively, and able to
accept constructive feedback and engage in
self-evaluation and self-reflection
SETTING LEARNING GOALS
 Goals for the unit of study
 Structure and sequence of activities
 A timeline for completion of activities
 Detail about resource materials for each
goal
 Details about grading procedures
ENGAGING IN THE LEARNING PROCESS
Students need to understand
themselves as learners as learners in
order to understand their needs as self-
directed learning students. Students
engaged in one of the three approaches
to studying while are learning :
 Deep approach
 Surface approach
 Strategic approach
EVALUATING LEARNING STUDENTS
Students must be able to engage in
self-reflection and self-evaluation of
learning goals and progress in a unit of
study. Students should be able to engage
in self-validation of achievement, but
should have the motivation to seek
feedback on progress and ideas from the
teacher or from others.
