Interpersonal leadership sets up an expectation that leaders must be in dialog or at least in view of their followers. This style of interaction is less likely as work stretches across locations and company boundaries as we telecommute, crowdsource, and take on joint ventures. There are alternatives and complements to interpersonal leadership. Clear and meaningful tasks, goals, and technology tools supporting the organization’s direction can substitute or support interpersonal leadership. Hiring strategies can also play a role. Our likely future needs leadership via flexible systems of people, technology, and organizational practice. The ideas in The Plugged-In Manager: Get in Tune With Your People, Technology, and Organization to Thrive provide a jumping off point for learning to lead by letting go. Lead by Letting Go is Terri Griffith’s next book project and she expects that women have an advantage. Join us to hear about how women may be better at “plugged-in” and contribute to this work in progress.
