Unit Resources Use the library. A comprehensive list of other recommended texts is available through the ‘Library Resources’ icon on WebCT. Suggested readings (articles and chapters from books) are available through the ‘E-reserve’ icon on WebCT. Find your own articles in journals. Use the Internet, consider online conference presentations. Use the Academic Skills Unit.

Assessment -Presentation Each week students will present an article followed by a discussion.  More detailed information regarding criteria will be presented in class. Presentation of article (25 marks) Discussion (15 marks) Total 40 marks
Assessment - Essay Length:  Approx. 2,500 words.  Choose  one  of the following topics: 1. Referring to the literature as well as to your own experience as a language teacher and/or learner, discuss the key principles that you feel are important for developing listening or reading skills (choose one skill only).  Explain how these key principles can be applied in the classroom.  2. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of two different approaches to language teaching with a particular group of language learners and context in mind.  3. Referring to recent literature discuss how the Internet can be used as a teaching and learning tool.  You will need to choose a specific area for this essay. Essay titles for this question need to be negotiated with the lecturer in charge.
Assessment - Participation Participation in class discussions It is expected that students will participate actively in class discussions.  Participation will be evaluated through using the following criteria:   being prepared for discussions.  student presentations; actively listening to others; respecting the ideas of others; willingness to contribute; progress in class participation for those experiencing initial difficulties; ability to relate new knowledge to previous knowledge; ability to evaluate and judge material; ability to be articulate and concise; ability to present coherent arguments. contributions to the class wiki and blog.
Tutorials – How they work The tutorials normally consist of: discussion / questions on the Monday lecture. a presentation and discussion of articles. (by students) Tutorial times Tuesday:  Tuesday 13.30 to 15.20  Room 5B86   and  16.30 to 18.20 Tutorial Groups

What do accomplished TESOL teachers need to know? What do accomplished TESOL teachers need to do? Consider the questions in relation to: a multicultural society; second language education; TESOL practice.
