The three components of language.
SPEECH LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION
What is
speech?
- speech is human vocal communication using
language. Each language uses phonetic
combinations of vowel and consonant sounds
that form the sound of its word.
-it is an expression of language using sound.
- it is a verbal means of communication with
others.
-it requires control over the muscles of the mouth as well as
your breathing.
- its not the only way of communicating. Other ways are writing,
drawing and singing.
- speech production is a multi-step process by which thoughts
are generated into spoken utterances. Production involves the
selection of appropriate words and the appropriate form of
those words from the lexicon and morphology, and the
organization of those words through the syntax. Then, the
phonetic properties of the words are retrieved, and the
sentence is uttered through the articulations associated with
those phonetic properties.
What is
language?
- language refers to the words we use and how we use them
to share ideas and get what we want.
- language is what we use to communicate with others.
- it’s either spoken or read.
- it consists of words in a structured and conventional way.
- It’s a social tool that allows us to communicate.
Languages
included
- What words mean. Some words have more than one meaning.
For example, “star” can be a bright object in the sky or
someone famous.
- How to make new words. For example, we can say “friend,”
“friendly,” or “unfriendly” and mean something different.
- How to put words together. For example, in English we say,
“Peg walked to the new store” instead of “Peg walk store new.”
- What we should say at different times. For example, we might
be polite and say, “Would you mind moving your foot?” But, if
the person does not move, we may say, “Get off my foot!”
What is
communication?
Communication is the process of sending
and receiving messages through verbal
or nonverbal means.
It includes speech or oral
communication, writing and graphical
representations.
Implications of
language
Many children with speech and language disabilities can get frustrated with
school and suffer emotionally due to their disorders.
Teachers must help these students develop the skills to become socially
integrated and academically successful.
The self-esteem of these students should also be cultivated in hopes that
they lead emotionally stable and positive lives in, and out of, the classroom.
We need to understand that we are not able to teach children every word or
possible sentence.
They rules of language must be taught. If they are not taught the rules of
language, they won’t be able to understand or process it.
The rules of language.
PHONOLOGICAL MORPHOLOGICAL
Phonological rules
- combining individual sounds of language into words.
- sounds of language are known as phonemes, may be consonants or vowels.
It describes how phonemes are realized as their allophones in the given environment.
- important skill where children learn the phonological rules of a language.
- children need to be taught to hear and say the sounds before learning to read a second language.
- its an auditory skill but may be difficult for children learning a second language especially if sounds
occur in their first language.
Morphological rules
Morphological rules are based on the concept of “lexical entry”. A lexical entry contains all the
phonological, syntactic, morphological and semantic information about a word.
- It is used to organize words.
-meaningless on its own eg c.a.t
- add an “s” or “Ed” to change the number or tense of the word.
- Helps children make meaning of new words
Conclusion
In conclusion, language is an important part of our day-
to-day lives.
We use it in school, at home and everywhere we go.
Without language it would be quite difficult to
communicate with one another.
