Laminar Air Flow is an enclosed bench designed to prevent contaminations like biological particles or any particle sensitive device.
This closed cabinet is usually made up of stainless steel without any gap or joints where spores might collect.
Laminar Hoods are equipped with a shortwave ultraviolet germicidal lamp to sterilize the shell
2. WHAT IS LAMINAR AIR FLOW ?
Laminar Air Flow is an enclosed bench designed to prevent contaminations
like biological particles or any particle sensitive device.
This closed cabinet is usually made up of stainless steel without any gap or
joints where spores might collect.
Laminar Hoods are equipped with a shortwave ultraviolet germicidal lamp to
sterilize the shell.
3. PRINCIPLE OF LAMINAR AIR FLOW
• Laminar Air Flow provides a work area with Aseptic/Sterile conditions for
the tissue culture.
• Laminar Air Flow has continuous displacement of air (it provides streamline
flow of air) that passes through HEPA ( High Efficiency Particulate Air)
filter that removes the particulates from the air.
4. TYPES OF LAMINAR AIR FLOW
It is of two types:
1. Vertical Laminar Air Flow.
It is the most used type of Laminar Flow.
In vertical flow cabinet, room air is entered
in working area through HEPA filter fitted on
top of the cabinet.
Thus, air flow downward (vertically) towards work surface and leaves the cabinet
sweeping out particles and bacteria.

2. Horizontal Laminar Air Flow.
In Horizontal air flow cabinet , room air
is entered in working area through HEPA
filter fitted on the back side of the cabinet.
Filtered air flows horizontally towards the user
creating sterile working environment.
6. PARTS OF LAMINAR AIR FLOW
Blower:
Blower assembly draws room air through pre filter and throws towards
HEPA filter.
Pre Filter :
It is primary air filter which filters room air initially and forward towards
HEPA filter. Usually, pre filter keeps out particles of 5 microns or higher.
7. HEPA filter:
This is final filter. Air filtered through pre filter is forwarded towards HEPA
filter. HEPA filters offers 99.99% efficiency for 0.3 micron particulates.
Light:
Light is fitted to provide proper illumination under the working area.
Work Bench:
It is made up of stainless steel. Samples /products are put on it for work.

8. Germicidal UV Lamp:
UV lamp is an added option which is used to sterilize working area prior to use. It is
advised no contact to made in chamber during this time.
Air Filteration :
The Efficiency of a Laminar Air Flow workstation depends upon the quality of pre
filters and HEPA filters.
Work Area:
The working area is carefully designed for comfortable working and easy cleaning.

10. APPLICATIONS OF LAMINAR AIR FLOW
• Laminar Air Flow is suitable for a Variety of applications, especially where a
clean air environment is required for smaller items , like electronic devices.
• Laminar Airflow can be tailor-made to the specific requirements of the
cleanrooms, especially in the medical, pharmaceutical, electronic, and
industrial industries.
11. PRECAUTIONS
• Do not switch on the UV light during the working period.
• Do not enter your head inside the Laminar Work Station or Laminar hood.
• Movement of the analyst should be slow or controlled during work to allow
Unidirectional air flow.
• Sanitize hands by sanitizing agent to reduce the microbial load.
• Avoid talking, Sneezing, Coughing during microbial work. If any of occurs
stop working and follow the cleaning activity and continue the work.
