Because beetles
and ladybirds both
look the same,
ladybirds are a
type of beetle.
Ladybird Anatomy

        • A ladybird has :a pair of
          antennas, eyes, a head,
          a pronotum, legs , tibia,
          tarsal claw, elytra ,
          tarsus and femur.
Species
There are about 5000 species of ladybird in world.

Habitat




Two spotted ladybirds live in North America. Amazonian ladybirds live in South
America. 22-spotted ladybirds live in Europe. Harlequin ladybirds live in Asia. Lunette
ladybirds live in Africa. 6-spotted zigzag ladybirds live in Indonesia. Mealy bug
ladybirds live in Australia.
Habitat
     Ladybirds do not live in
     nests. They live in tree
     barks or plant stems.
     When it rains they
     shelter.
Ladybird Life Cycle




Eggs are laid and they hatch in 3-7 days. Next is the
larval stage till 21 days. Then it’s the pupae stage for
5-7 days. After that it turns into an adult ladybird.

Life




Ladybirds live in groups but not in a family group. They
live near each other so they can mate. Several ladybirds
will often live together on the same plant.
Life




Ladybirds are active in the day. Female ladybirds
normally search for a good safety place to lay her eggs &
also a place where there is food for the small tiny
ladybirds. Male ones look for yummy food.
Movement




Ladybirds use their legs to move. Even if their legs are
small for it’s body. Good thing it is small because it
won’t get crunched. They also have spotty wings to fly.
Food




Ladybirds eat aphids. Some ladybirds can eat 40 aphids
in a day. Only a few ladybirds eat plants & mildew, which
is a plant disease. Some eat fruit too.
Hibernating Ladybirds




Some ladybirds hibernate during winter, which means
they sleep for a long time. Some hibernate in large
groups and some in small groups. They eat a lot of food
during Summer so they could stay alive in Winter.
Predators




Ladybirds also have dangerous predators. Spiders, birds ,
even other insects are predators if food runs out.
Protect




They protect themselves by pretending to be dead or
using their bright colors to warn the predators that it
has a bad taste or squirt out bad-tasting liquid.
Pest Ladybirds




Some species of ladybirds are pest ladybirds, means they
make problems for humans by coming into their houses.
Harlequin ladybirds are a pest.
