This document outlines an assessment for students to measure work done by gravity on weights. 2 spring balance or force measurer meterstick calculator
2 objects of different weights (same material) string
Procedure:
As you perform the procedure, write down your observations right away under OBSERVATIONS.
A. Experimental Set-up 1
1. Hang one object on the spring balance or force measurer. From the floor, life the object to a
height of 1m. You have done work on the object. Get the reading.
2. Do the same with the second object.
3. To find the work done on an object, multiply the force needed to lift the object by the distance
through which it was lifted. Use the formula: W = fd.
4. Record data and results of computations on the table below. Note that the definition of work
applies to objects moved in the same direction as the force acting on them.

1. Now pull each object across the table through a distance of 1 m. Try to keep the string stretched
and parallel to the table surface as you steadily pull the spring balance. Read the scale as you pull
uniformly across the table.
2. Since you may not always get the same readings, make several trials and solve for the average
force reading. Record data and results of computations in the table below.
