Urban fabric can be divided into two types - the traditional city and the city-in-the-park. A traditional city focuses on building volumes and de-emphasizing space between them. A city-in-the-park focuses on buildings set in a park-like landscape. Modern Quwait City expanded randomly without planning and now lacks a clear identity or culture. It is made up of isolated residential areas built like cities-in-the-park, separated by major roads.
