The periodic table was created by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1885 to organize the known elements and predict properties of undiscovered elements. It arranges elements by atomic number and groups them according to their chemical and physical properties, including their atomic mass, melting and boiling points, and number of valence electrons. Elements are grouped together based on these similarities to illustrate relationships between elements and their placement within the periodic table.
