A thermal power station is a power station in which heat energy is converted to electric power. In most of the places in the world the turbine is steam-driven. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator.
2. KSTPS is the first coal based power plant in Rajasthan.
It is located ideally on the bank of CHAMBAL River at the
upstream of KOTA BARRAGE.
Its first unit of capacity 110 MW is commissioned on 1983 and
last one on 2009.
It is one of the highest power generating plant with installed
capacity of 1240 MW.

7. It is called the HEART of thermal power
plant because it provides the fuel for
combustion in boiler.
There are 14 tracks for transportation
COAL HANDLING PLANT:-
8. 20000 tons coal requirement per day.
The main coal sources are:
1. Coal India Ltd. (CIL)
2.South Eastern Coalfield Ltd. (SECL)
3. Northern Coalfield Ltd. (NCL)
(coal comes from 1000 km distance)
Everyday 3- 4 trains of coal are unloaded, each train consists 58
wagons.(approx.3500-3800 tons)
Coal is unloaded from wagons by means of WAGON TRIPPLER
Stock yard Capacity -5.0 lack tons
COAL HANDLING PLANT:-
9. Bunkers Crusher house Hoppers
Row coal feeders
Coal mills

TANGENTIAL FIRING OF PULVERISED COAL
OVERVIEW OF COAL HANDLING PLANT:-
Row coal from COAL
INDIA LIMITED
To KSTPS from gurla via a
single railway track
Wagon trippler
CONVEYING SYSTEM
Coal size reduced by 20 mm
10. BOILER:-
It is a closed vessel in which water under pressure is converted
into steam.
Hot water or steam used to transfer heat to a process.
A boiler is always designed to absorb maximum amount of
heat released in process of combustion.
Furnace:- It is primary part of boiler where the fuel is burnt to
liberate the heat energy.

OVER VIEW OF BOILER:-
13. SUPER HEATER:-
Super heater consists group of tubes made by chromium -
molybdenum.
The tubes are heated by the heat of flue gases travelling from
the furnace to chimney , so the temperature increased.
Super heater removes the moisture from the steam leaving from
the boiler.
14. ECONOMISER:-
Function-To extract some part of
heat from flue gases & heat the
feed water
Process- Counter flow of flue
gases & water
Benefits- Increases efficiency by
10-12% & causes saving in fuel
consumption 5-15%
15. AIR PREHEATER:-
Function- To raise the
temperature of air supplied
to boiler furnace for coal
combustion.
Benefits- Increase the
efficiency of plant.
Type- Plate, Tubular,
Regenerative.
KSTPS uses Regenerative
type.
16. CONDENSER:-
It condenses exhaust steam & also removes air from steam.
Steam condensed by condenser used as a good source of feed
water to boiler.
It improves the overall plant efficiency.
19. TURBINE:-
FUNCTION- Turbine is a machine in which shaft is rotated by the
impact of the working fluid such as steam , water etc.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION-
Rated output -- 110 MW
Rated speed – 3000 rpm
Direction of rotation – clockwise
Type -3 cylinder, impulse reaction

STEAM TURBINE:-
21.
22. It converts mechanical power into electrical power.
PRINCIPLE- Electromechanical energy conversion
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION-
Active output - 110 MW
Power factor – 0.85 lag
Excitation voltage - 230 Volt
Rated voltage – 11 KV
Rated speed – 3000 rpm
Phase connection – star-star
GENERATOR:-
23. COOLING SYSTEM:-
In KSTPS hydrogen cooling system is employed for generator
cooling.
Hydrogen is used because of its superior cooling properties &
low density.
Thermal conductivity of H2 7.3 times of air.
Water cooling also used for any kind of fire.
24. COOLING TOWER:-
Warm water is feed to the top.
Flows from the top to bottom. The
water drops falling from the top
come in contact with air, lose heat to
the air and get cooled.
Its purpose is to reuse of the water.
It increases the efficiency of plant.
It increases the per capital
investment of plant.
In K.S.T.P.S. only unit 6th and 7th has
cooling tower.
25. ASH HANDLING PLANT:-
In thermal plants 25% is
boiler furnace bottom ash and
75% is pulverized fuel ash.
Electrostatic Precipitator is
used in ash handling plant to
remove fly ash.
26. WATER TREATMENT PLANT:-
The principle problems in boiler are corrosion and steam
impurities so they require clean and soft water for longer life
& better efficiency .
( corrosion costs power station crores of rupees in repair )
Therefore , it is required that water is first purified and
softened by chemical treatment & then delivered to the
boiler.
27. WATER TREATMENT PLANT:-
Pressure filter removes
undisclosed impurities from raw
water.
Carbon filter removes excess
chlorine from clarified water.
D.M. plant removes dissolved
impurities from clarified water.
Conductivity ,pH & silica content
of this water must be checked
time to time.
28. SWITCHYARD:-
The 220 KV Switch yard is the main part of the KTPS.
There are 11 feeders connected at 220 KV switchyard
31. In control room various controls are provided & various
measurements are made . Instrumentation Limited Kota is
major supplier of apparatus.
Automatic control is provided for combustion , feed water
regulation & reheat temperature.
