A mixed number represents a whole number and a fraction combined, such as 3 1/3. An improper fraction is when the numerator is larger than the denominator, like 24/5. To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator and the remainder is the numerator of the fraction with the same denominator. To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator, which becomes the new numerator over the original denominator.
