This document provides information for parents about kindergarten orientation at the Traditional Learning Centre at Dr. J. K. Mulloy School. Staggered Entry
Tuesday, September 1
Wednesday, September 2
ALL students will come to school
on Thursday, September 3
Look in the Placement Letter you will receive after this
presentation to see which day your child will be coming to
school.

7. The First Day of School
Prior to your child’s first day, talk positively about school -”You are going to have
so much fun.” Tell them positive stories that you remember from school, drive to
the school, walk around the outside, play at the playground, set up a homework
area at home with supplies and let them use them.
Follow your child’s bus to school.
When the bell rings, line up at the sign for Kindergarten at the back of
the school on the lower level.
Bring your child to the classroom to meet the teachers.
Follow the “routine instructions” provided by the teacher.
Hug your child good-bye.
(You may come back to school at the end of the day &
follow your child’s bus home if you wish.)

Flexible Groupings
• Kindergarten children will not be
assigned a homeroom during the first
few weeks of school.
• This is to provide the teachers with
an opportunity to get to know all of
the children, and to place the
students in the optimal environment
for their learning style.

The Reporting Process
• Sept 24/25 - Conferences
• November 19/20- Conferences
• March 10/11- Conferences
• Two formal written report cards
(January and June)
• Knowing and speaking more than one language is an advantage. That said, if
you need the support of an interpreter during conferences please let the
school know in September and we can make these arrangements.

11. School Fees
Fee information
$15 for Instructional Supplies and Materials and
$30 for Cultural and Fine Arts.
The school fee covers the cost of all student classroom
supplies (pencils, books, crayons, etc.)
Out of school field trips and special programs will be
subject to additional fees.
If $ is an issue, School Fee Waiver forms are available at the
table in the hall or from the office during school hours.

Swimming
You will need to complete a bussing contract, to ensure
there is a seat on the bus for your child.
Transportation routes are based on the information
received when parents send in the contracts, please send
them back on time.
Stops are congregated meaning that they pick them based
on a cluster of students in the area, so for some this could
mean a drive to the congregated stop by parents.
The bussing contract will be mailed to you unless you have
another child in the school, in which case the family
contract will be sent home with them.
The contract must be handed in by the due date listed.

On the 1st
Day of School:
Send your child to school with the letter of the bus,
he/she takes home, printed visibly on his/her hand.
This helps us to put each child onto the correct bus.
At the beginning of the year, Kindergarten students are
always escorted to and from the bus by either a staff
member or Gr. 4 Buddy.
It is important that your child
rides the bus on the first day
if possible…
parents can follow the bus to
school in their cars.

Kindergarten at TLC
• Kindergarten is the foundation of the TLC
program. In Kindergarten we teach the
beginning skills that your child will need to
be successful in grade 1 and onwards.
• This is not a good program to choose if you
plan to take extended vacations during the
school year. Please be aware that if you do
take your child out for an extended time, it
may impact their learning significantly
because we offer a highly rigorous program.

Reading
• The goal is to help your child move from recognizing both their
upper and lowercase letters, learning the sounds that the letters
make and reading aa books to reading Level A through C books by
the end of the year.

• The goal is to help your child move from printing all of the upper
and lowercase letters at the beginning of the year to writing
sequence stories by the end of the year.

Math
• The goal is to help your child move from recognizing the numbers
from 1-10 at the beginning of the year to representing numbers in
multiple ways and from there moving onto addition and
subtraction.

• 5-10 minutes each day
• SMALL snack – one food item & one drink
• Water is a good choice – no pop - (no container
recycling is available in Kindergarten)
• Snack must be nut-free
• We try to promote healthy choices- i.e. fruit,
crackers, granola bar... Please no candy,
chocolate bars, etc.
This is not a lunch

27. What will you need to
start school?
• A backpack to hold homework, library books, etc.
• Black, non-marking shoes with velcro fasteners and a good
grip for gym activities to leave at school (no shoes with
laces unless they can tie them independently)
• Formal School Uniform:
– Green cardigan, navy pants, white shirt and tie for boys
– Green cardigan, tunic/dress or navy pants, white shirt and
navy or hunter green tights/socks for girls
– Formal days every Monday, assembly days, and field trips
• Please do not send any school supplies – everything is
provided by the school
Everything MUST be labeled clearly with your child’s name. Especially
your child’s cardigan and vest.

31. What can you do this summer?
• Help your child learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet, both upper and lower case
• Read with your child every day and ask them questions about the story - (What happened first,
next, finally)
• Visit the library for books on letters, numbers, shapes, colours, etc.
• Practice printing both first and last name eg. Annie Smith
– Use capital and lowercase letters as shown on Blogger

– Focus on proper tripod pencil grip
– Include time concepts when talking with your child (yesterday, tomorrow, morning,
afternoon)
– Describe items using words like heavy, light, big, small, front, back, top, bottom, first, last
– Identify different workers in the community and what they do (teacher, doctor, farmer,
police officer)
– Sort items at home by category (toys, food, animals, clothes)

• - putting on your coat
- zipping zippers
- changing shoes & tying shoe laces
- buttoning buttons
- using a public washroom
• Sing songs, make up rhymes
• Identify body parts - chin, wrist, shoulder, forehead...
• Practice counting objects up to 20
• Count forwards and backwards to 20
• Practice cutting, gluing and colouring inside the lines, draw people (head, arms, trunk, legs)

Practice the pre-printing shapes x
• Go to the playground / play outside, jump forward, balance on 1 foot, skip, gallop, catch a ball, run and kick
a ball, hop, spin, march, clap
• Visit interesting places and talk about what you do/see, look at signs and identify them (exit, washroom,
stop, recycling)
