This document summarizes the genre of a music video for a singer-songwriter and how various elements were used to convey that genre. Specifically:
The music video uses conventions common to the singer-songwriter genre like natural coloring, close-ups to show emotion, and shots of acoustic instruments. Locations like a castle were chosen to symbolize themes in the song. Movement, editing techniques, sound, costumes, props, and lighting were all selected deliberately based on research of other singer-songwriter music videos.
The document discusses various film theorists and how they define genre. Elements were included both to clearly define the genre while also keeping things interesting for the audience. The goal was for the audience to easily identify the genre of

Evaluate your media product in terms of genre.
Our genre is Singer/Song writer in the music video departments, we found this out through
specific codes and conventions through different theorists so that we could attract our
target audience and successfully by giving everything they expect to see in a Singer/Song
writer music video.
How we found out the codes and conventions of our music video was by watching (music
videos) and researching other artists in the same genre. Such as Taylor Swift ‘Love story’ and
Louise Rose ‘middle of the bed’ where we found they use certain conventions and codes for
their genre such as:
Colours – we want the shots to look natural with neutral colouring to make the scenery
(look) realistic to give it that natural feeling (and realism to everyday life).
Camera shots – close ups to show emotions of the character so that the audience feel how
personnel it is for the artist, full length shot, mid shots, rule of thirds so the audience are
drown to the left, framing shot, performance shots, close ups shots of instruments (acoustic,
piano or guitar) and narrative shots of outside locations such as her castle, which symbolises
her ruined home. We also made sure we did (used) visuals between the lyrics so that the
audience truly got a full image of her and the meaning.
Angles – low angles to show her emotions e.g. that’s (when) she’s feeling down or high
angle to show that she’s feeling on top of the world.
Movement – panning when walking up the hill to get the full shot of her distressed.
Editing techniques – we used dissolves to link together each scene, fade outs, cross framing
and cut to the beat (so that it was more rhythmic).
Sound – live sound track of her playing the piano (acoustic) and (with) slow tempo.
Mis-en-scene – for costume we used a white dress to portrait her innocence and purity and
for the extra characters we used casual everyday clothing. Props we used lighting for the
performance shots using a blue Jell to represent the emotions. and ( We also used) spot
light so that all the attention is focused on her. For Locations we used a lot of outside
locations such as the castle that symbolises her home, and Stenkrith which is very naturist
and calming somewhere for her to get away. Them (Then) we used a room which we

and light while she did her performance shots.
We looked at a lot of theorists to make sure we defined out genre so that audience could
recognise and connect; we also saw what the some theorists had to say and saw that they
were true in some context.
Robert Stam said that genre is defined so we have made sure that all the conventions and
codes we used and research we have done of other Singer/Song writer are similar so that
audience are attracted to it but at the same time we have also added different things to
keep the audience interested such as using difference (different) shots which Neale said
(advices). However there is sub-genre which is hard to define because they use little
difference to make them different such as pop and Pop/electronic.
Another theorist is Rich Altman who make (says) that to define a genre is by two things
semantic elements and syntactic elements which we think is true. In semantic elements we
have used performance shots of the piano which is an acoustic instrument and a lot of
singer/song writers do this (so they have a) to have this more personnel connection. Also
the clothing and makeup we kept minimal so that they are not taken by (too) drastic
clothing or makeup but that they listen to the music and can feel connected to the artist.
Syntactic elements we show emotions such as love and sadness by using close up shots. We
did this so that the audience can easily identify the genre of our music video very easily.
