4ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels
The ICTFOOTPRINT.eu proposition is…
A first set of recommendations, focusing on aspects related to methodologies and their
implementation
Dedicated to green ICT rather than ICT for green
Intended for the European Commission
Covering – but not limited to – policy aspects
The recommendations are organized between three categories
1. Increase awareness
and knowledge on ICT
environmental impacts 2. Convince ICT
stakeholders of benefits
from reduced ICT
impacts
3. Facilitate
commitment to a
greener ICT sector
5. Increase awareness and knowledge on ICT
environmental impacts
5ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels
Make awareness raising
possible among targeted
audience(s)
Have adequate methodologies
to encourage assessment of
environmental impacts
Increase knowledge of impacts
thanks to better data
availability
2 scenarios:
- Data does not exist yet
- Data is not collected / shared yet
(e.g. traceability of waste flows)
1. Need for convergence, consistency and
complementarity between existing methods
2. Need for new methodologies, on specific
targets or topics (e.g. PEFCR)
Content available for general public,
private organisations, as educational
material, etc.
6. Convince ICT stakeholders of benefits from
reduced ICT impacts
6ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels
Showcase quantified
benefits
Enhance networking
between stakeholders
Promote use of purchasing
tools (e.g. labels) in
purchasing activities
Starting with public organisations,
then extended to other stakeholders
- At regional, MS and EU levels
- Network targeting a specific group
of actors or a broader audience
Potential benefits: reduced environmental
footprint, economic savings, better image &
marketing, competitive advantage, etc.
7. Facilitate commitment and actions to a more
environmental-friendly ICT sector
6ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels
Turn providers into actors towards
greener ICT
Turn users into actors towards
greener ICT
Continuous communication and
training on the topic
Develop dedicated policy incentives - Potential topics: reuse, eco-design, etc.
- Through regulatory, financial, etc.
E.g. thanks to accessible
assessment tools
E.g. thanks to purchasing tools (labels) and
awareness raising among users & providers
Develop green ICT strategy at MS & EU levels
and integrate it to digital strategies
