!!!EarthQuakes!!!
Why does New Zealand have earthquakes?

                                                    How do we stay safe during a earthquake?

There’s now way Christchurch can be rebuilt!
                   right? Whats the story behind earthquakes?

How do we Build earthquake safe buildings?
How do we stay safe during a earthquake?
          Our goal is for everyone to say safe during an earthquake. With up to date
          information on where to go and what to do.

Your survival kit must have in it:
     * First Aid kit and essential medications
     * Canned food and a can opener
     * At least 12 liters of water per person
     * Protective clothing, Rain wear, bedding and sleep wear (sleeping bags)
     * Battery powered radio, Torch and extra batteries
     * Special items for elderly or disabled family members
     * Written Instructions for how to turn off gas, electricity, water if it advises you to turn it off
     * Keeping essentials, such as Torch and Hard footwear, by your bed
     * A compass
     * A loud whistle
     * A tow rope
     * Battery jumper cables
     * A shovel
     * A small pup tent
     * Pet rations
     * Fuel (For you car)

Steps to survive:
1.If you are inside when the shaking starts, hide under a table to avoid being hit by falling objets. If you are outside, find a clear
spot away from buildings, trees and power lines. Drop to the ground and cover yourself with anything AVAILABLE.
2.Stay still until the earthquake stops shaking and you are sure it is safe to move. Try to avoid windows and dangerous objets.
3.After the shaking stops, check for injuries. Protect yourself from further danger by putting on your long pants, long sleeved top,
hard shoes and gloves.
4.Look out for fires and if you see one put it out. If you smell gas and can see it leaking turn it off
4.Listen to the radio for instructions. Expect after shocks. Each time you feel one drop, cover and hold on!

If you follow these steps you will be safer and have a better chance to survive!
Whats the story behind earthquakes?
When the earth shakes, rattles and rolls, in the middle of the night, like Christchurch, you wonder what the
hell is happening. You think you are going to die. Read this and find out what is really happening meters and
                                           meters under your feet.

Earthquakes are caused when tension is released from the rocks in the Earth's crust and mantle. This tension
is due to friction between the large techtonic plates floating on magma on the Earth's surface. The plates stay
   on the earth due to gravity. Sometimes earthquakes happen when the rocks in the earth's crust bend and
     break. This causes shock waves to travel on the earth's surface, resulting in widespread destruction.

  The earth is made up of four main layers. The outer layer being the crust, then the mantle, the outer core
and at the centre of the earth the inner core. The crust is made up of hard rock. The mantle is mainly molten
 lava on which the crust is floating on. The core is mostly iron, with the outer core being liquid and the inner
  being solid. The mantle is continually moving; this is called convection. It is also believed that the earth is
   divided into more than a dozen plates, which are floating on the mantle. It is called plate techtonics. The
plates often rub together, pull apart, collide or dive under one another. These movements cause earthquakes.

   Earthquakes usually occur in places where two plates meet, called faults. Earthquakes are mostly deep
 within the earth's crust, when the pressure between two plates is too great for them to be held in place. The
underground rocks then snap, sending shock waves out in all directions. These are called seismic waves. The
underground origin of an earthquake is called the focus. The point at which an earthquake originates on the
                                        surface is called the epicenter.

         Now when the earth shakes, rattles and rolls now you will know what is happening under your feet.
!!!!Earthquake Facts!!!

Here are some earthquake Facts we hope that you didn’t know before...

The tectonic plates are 40 to 200 kilometers in depth.

The largest recorded earthquake in the United States was a magnitude 9.2 in 1964.

 Earthquakes can occur on the moon- Earthquakes on the moon are known as "moonquakes". These earthquakes
occur as much and have much smaller magnitudes compared to the earthquakes that occur on Earth.

Alaska has the most earthquake in the world. Aproximatley every fourteen years Alaska has an earthquake
with a magnitude of 8.

The largest recorded earthquake in the US was a magnitude of 9.2, which was in Prince William Sound in
1964.
