Who is Keatsā€™s:-
ā€¢ Born on October 31, 1795,London.
ā€¢ Keats was the eldest of four surviving children; his younger siblings
were George, Tom and Frances Mary.
ā€¢ In 1803 he begun his studies at a small school in Enfield, England, run
by a man named John Clark.
ā€¢ In April, 1804, when he was eight his father died.
ā€¢ In March 1810, When he was 14 his mother died of Tuberculosis.
ā€¢ In 1816 Keats become a Licensed apothecory but he never practiced
his profession, deciding instead to write Poetry.
ā€¢ He wrote some minor Odes.
ā€¢ ā€œOde to Psycheā€
ā€¢ ā€œOde on Indolenceā€
ā€¢ ā€œOde On a Greacian Urnā€
ā€¢ ā€œOde to a Nightingaleā€
ā€¢ ā€œOde to Autumnā€
ā€¢ In 1819, he also started to read Wordsworth with whom, like the
other younger Romantics, he developed a Love-hate relationship.
Keatsā€™Odes:-
ā€¢ Odes do not tell a Single story.
ā€¢ There are no unifying characters.
ā€¢ But there are numerous suggestive interrelations.
ā€¢ Keats unmistakable consciousnee unites them.
ā€¢ A personal, psychological progress can be seen here.
ā€¢ A movement from an impassioned longing for escape (nightingale) to
calm fulfillment (Melancholy &Autumn).
Ode to psyche:-
ā€¢ An important departure from Keatsā€™s early poems, which frequently
describe an escape into the pleasant realms of oneā€™s imagination.
ā€¢ Keatsā€™ interpretation of cupid and psyche myth.
ā€¢ The poem celebrates the imaginationā€™s awesome and mysterious
creative power.
ā€œAnd pardon that thy secrets should be mysteries
Into your own shell- like earā€
Speaker say that please forgive me for singing songs about your
mysteries into your own shell- like ear.
ā€¢ The poem uses the power of the imagination to prise the power of
the imagination, building an inner temple to the goddess of the inner
life.
ā€¢ Speaker encounters psyche, heā€™s travelling through his own
imagination.
Ode to Indolence:-
ā€¢ The poem relies on a first person narration.
ā€¢ Break from the structure of the classical form.
ā€¢ A morning spent in idleness.
ā€¢ Three figures are presented Amibition, Love and Poesy.
ā€¢ Contemplation on life and art.
ā€¢ The poet realises that he cannot have all three in his life.
Ode to a Nightingale:-
ā€¢ Describes Keats experience of Negative Capability.
ā€œwhen a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts,
without any irritable reaching after fact and reasonā€.
ā€¢ The poem present conflict between Reality and romantic ideal of
uniting with nature.
ā€¢The nightingale described experience a type of death but does not
actually die. the songbird is capable of living through its song, which is
a fate that human cannot expect.
ā€¢ end of the poem pleasure cannot be last, death is part of life.
ā€¢ Swinburne wrote in the encyclopedia, Britannica that ā€œthe ode to
a Nightingaleā€, is one of the final masterpieces of human work in
all time and for all agesā€.
Conclusion:-
According to Rene Wellek..
ā€œKeats has his own personal voice
Which should not be drowned in
the general romantic chorusā€
John Keats was not only the last but also the most perfect of the
Romanticism. He was a great Worshipper of beauty. He only wrote
what was in his own heart. He had shown beauty and truth in his
Poetry.
