INTRODUCTION
The Peninsular Plateau is a tableland composed of old crystalline, igneous and
metamorphic rocks.
It was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the Gondwana land.
This plateau has broad and shallow valleys and rounded hills.
A body or piece of land enclosed on three sides by water, jutting out from a
larger body of land is called peninsula.
All river basins are
good for agriculture.
The chief crop is
cotton, however
sugarcane, rice, and
other crops are also
common.
The term 'trap', used in
geology for such rock
formations, is derived from
the Dutch word for stairs
referring to the step-like
hills forming the landscape
of the region.
They consist of multiple
layers of solidified flood
basalt that together are
more than 2,000 m
6,562 feet thick, cover
an area of 500,000 km2
The DeccanTraps
are a large igneous
province located on
the Deccan plateau
of west-central
India.
It is one of the
largest volcanic
features on the
EARTH.
THE CENTRAL
HIGHLANDS
• Central India is considered
by many as the heart of
India’s wildlife.
• It is home to some of
India’s largest forest tracts,
rich wildlife and
myriad{native} who have
been living in the forests.
• This region includes the
states of Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, parts of
eastern Maharashtra,etc.].
ARE NORTHERN PLAINS ?
The northern plain of India is
formed by the interplay of
three major rivers – Ganga,
Indus and Brahmaputra.
In Tertiary period there
was a sea there,
TETHYS , with
extension to north and
west .
Due to tectonic
plate movement
Indian lithospheric
plate underthrusts
the lighter Eurasian
plate on the north .
This shallow basin marine
sediments began folding due to
compressive forces acting from
north and south Evolution and
upheaval of Himalaya began.
A flat land of extensive
alluvial deposits led to
the formation of the
northern plains of India

PLAINS
They stretch
from Punjab in
West to Assam
in East, and
hence, extends
over 2,500 km in
length.
3 main rivers flow
through the
northern plains:
Ganga,
Brahmaputra,
and Satluj.
They are made
up of very
fertile soil
called Alluvial
soil.
The Northern
Fertile Plain lies
to the south of
Himalayan
Region. It is also
called the
Gangetic Plain
FORMATION OF
WERE HIMALAYAS ?
Once, all the world’s landmass was connected, forming one super-continent known as Pangea.
Approximately 200 million years ago, tectonic forces broke apart this giant continent into pieces, eventually forming the continents
we know today.
As convection currents worked independently on the plates associated with these new continental pieces, the plates
and their respective continents began to drift across the globe to their present-day geographical locations.
Eighty million years ago, India was approximately 6400 km (3968 miles) south of the Eurasian plate.
Separating the two was theTethys Sea.The Indo-Australian tectonic plate was pushed northward by the convection currents
generated in the inner mantle.
For millions of years, India made its way across the sea toward the Eurasian plate.
As India approachedAsia, around 40 million years ago, theTethys Sea began to shrink and its seabed slowly pushed
upwards.
The Tethys Sea di sappeared completely around 20 mi lli on years ago and sedi ments ri si ng

SOME PICS………
YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIMALAYA?
The literal translation of Himalayas is ‘Abode of Snow’,
which was coined by joining two Sanskrit words —
‘hima’ (snow) and ‘alaya’ (abode).
According to the Hindu mythology, Himalayas is the
home of God Shiva.

They consist of multiple layers of solidified flood basalt that together are more than 2,000 m 6,562 feet thick, cover an area of 500,000 km2 The DeccanTraps are a large igneous province located on the Deccan plateau of west-central India. It is one of the largest volcanic features on the EARTH.

They are made up of very fertile soil called Alluvial soil. The Northern Fertile Plain lies to the south of Himalayan Region. It is also called the Gangetic Plain
  • 16. WERE HIMALAYAS ? Once, all the world’s landmass was connected, forming one super-continent known as Pangea. Approximately 200 million years ago, tectonic forces broke apart this giant continent into pieces, eventually forming the continents we know today. As convection currents worked independently on the plates associated with these new continental pieces, the plates and their respective continents began to drift across the globe to their present-day geographical locations. Eighty million years ago, India was approximately 6400 km (3968 miles) south of the Eurasian plate.
