This document provides a summary of the proposed documentary "Kamyko". It will profile the owners of the hair salon Kamyko, David and Brian, who moved from South Africa to England. The documentary will explore their journey in setting up their own business and the homophobia they faced as gay males in the hairdressing industry. It will include interviews of David and Brian at their salon, as well as shots of them working, with the goal of educating young people about homophobic bullying.
2. Kamyko
Kamyko is a thriving hair dressing salon situated in the center of Wellington. We
have decided to come in from the angle that looks at their journey from moving
from their home country south Africa and setting up their own business in
England. We also hope to look at their relationship and the homophobia they
might have received.
However we are still struggling on whether this area might be too much of a
sensitive subject as, we need to be careful about what questions we ask and they
way we come across to them. We are looking to try and aim are target audience
towards young members of society who make have been subject to homophobic
bullying. But also how people reacted to them being males in the hairdressing
industry.
3. Freitag’s pyramid
The exposition will be a range of
shots of David and Brian working,
along with shots of the salon
We will then introduce the
salon managers. And open up
their story about moving from
Africa and how they both met
The climax will be them
talking about the
homophobia they faced
Shots of how they overcame this
and their hair dressing journey
How they established themselves and why
the decided to set up kamyko
5. Locations
The location that this
documentary will be
taking place in is their
own hair dressing salon
kamyko. This is because
I think it will be better if
we can interview them in
their own workspace, it
will also allows us to get
shots of them working
whilst answering
questions also.
6. Research
In terms of research, because we had to come
up with this idea very quickly, because the
band documentary fell through. I have tried
to apply the research and methods that we
were going to use for that documentary to
this new short film idea. Ongoing research
will still be carried out throughout this entire
process.
7. Shots
Because we are going to be filming within
their own hair salon, I hope to get some
really natural shots of them cutting clients
hair.
There is also the issue that clients might not
be comfortable filming, having their hair cut
so I have already resolved this issue and
have volunteers who are willing to be filmed.
I also want to try and film some shots of the
products and the equipment that they use
8. Cost
The cost of this short film will be incredibly low because the props and hair
dressing equipment that we need the salon already have. We are also booking a
slot with them so we don’t waste any of their time just as much as our own.
Also we both have transportation to and from the location and we can use
equipment that is open for our use at college.
9. -( plan B contingency)
The main narrative is based on a 60 year old elderly man named kelvin. Kelvin is a
simple man who works and lives on mill farm campsite. As a general janitor doing
odd jobs around the site. However he also has a complicated and dangerous past.
We decided to go with the title of kelvin as it is simple enough it wont take away
from the main story of the character. Its also broad enough title that it won give
away the plot straight away. We are also keeping this as a working title.
We also decided to go with the tagline “ a simple man with a not so simple man”
because we wanted to keep the audience guessing.
