2. The Locations
After much consideration we finally decided on our locations for the
filming of our documentary. All of the locations serve a different
purpose to the idea of our documentary. We chose: the dance studio,
the photography studio, the refectory and internet café, a psychology
classroom, around Solihull Sixth Form College, Maisie’s lounge, around
Touchwood Centre and in the shops.
3. The Dance Studio in Solihull Sixth Form
As dance is a mostly female subject, and our target audience is
females, we thought it would be appropriate to feature
interviews and vox pops filmed in the dance studio.
4. The Photography Studio
We plan to gain access to the photography studio to film an interview in our documentary.
We believe that girls speak more openly about the pressures of the perfect appearance and
therefore that suggests that it affects girls more. However, that is not necessarily the case so
we thought we would include an interview of a boys perspective on the topic. As boys are
generally less open about the topic of pressure to make the interview realistic we would
black the speaker out and keep it anonymous. The photography studio would be a quiet,
private place for an anonymous interview.
5. The Refectory and Internet Café
These two locations will be perfect for vox pops as they will be full of
people from our target audience that can feature in our documentary.
6. Psychology Classroom
One of the experts for our documentary will be a psychology teacher.
They will be able to provide statistics and knowledge of how pressures
from the media have an effect on those who it is targeted at. A
psychology class would be appropriate as it is a more formal setting
than the internet café and refectory but still informal enough so it
relates to the feel of our documentary.
7. The College Sign and around the college
The college sign may be a good location to introduce the vox pops and interviews
that will be filmed around college. As we will be using the participatory mode in our
documentary, one of the documentary makers can be involved. Therefore, one of us
can act as the ‘presenter’ and introduce the topic of the documentary whilst standing
near the sign.
8. Maisie’s Lounge
We had the idea of having a young girl sat watching television to begin our
documentary. This one girl represents the millions of young, impressionable girls
that watch the “ideal woman” being presented on TV on a daily basis. The rest
of the documentary then acts as a sort of thought process as, using the circular
narrative, at the end we will finish off the section by returning back to this room
and the girl still sat in front of the television.
10. Shops around Solihull
As a section of our documentary focuses on the pressure to buy cosmetics to look the best possible you, we
thought about which local shops sold make up and the ones we found were Superdrug and Boots. Filming and
vox pops could be useful here but also interviews with experts from the shops themselves.
