Kalagan ethnic group
Kagan came from the word kaag which means to inform, to secure or secrecy.
The other term also is Ka – allagan which means shining light referring from to the sun due as they are believed to be more advanced in lifestyle and society than their neighbouring tribes which live on the highlands of the mountains of Davao.

4. RELIGIOus/beliefs/rituals
–They continue to believe in a variety of
environmental spirits. Many tales are also told of
magic, sorcery, and supernatural beings.
–Muslim religious leaders and teachers (imams and
panditas) direct religious life and teach young boys
to read and memorize the Koran (Islam's holy
book).

5. –Before the Islam came in the Mindanao, Philippines
early Kagans is believed to be an animist and they
believed that there is a one supreme God called
Tagallang means "Creator".
–They also believe that all of nature like trees, stone,
mountains, river and ocean has a spirit they
called maguya and they respect it by performing
ceremonial rituals as a sign of respect.

priests called balyans which
means shaman or healer or the one
who can contact the spirits by asking
cure for the sick, for the guidance and
security of the tribe, and even fortune-
telling.

spiritual realm by performing a kulintang and a
ritual dance holding a "Kasag", a native shield
with bells surrounding it and while the balyans
are dancing, the bells creating a sound as an
activation of the spirits to enter the body of the
balyan.
8. CULTURE
–The Kagan social structure is unusual because it
is modified by a system of social rank, certain
rules of descent, and distinctive marriage
patterns. For most purposes, social rank is less
important than blood ties. Higher-ranking
families maintain elaborate genealogies to prove
their claims of descent.
9. WEDDING
– There are three Kalagan terms for the bride price (the saud ng
gates, saoo sang kaoowa, and sarilin sang kowangan) that reflect
an old tradition. Even though the meaning of these terms is hard
to define, they are still being used.
– For the saud ng gatas they usually ask for a cup or bowl. For the
saoo sang kaoowa they ask for a dagmay (tubular skirt). For the
sarilin sang kowangan they ask for livestock or money. It is not
only the girl's family that benefits from the bride price. Other
relatives can ask for specific things.
10. –The actual marriage rite consists of the
imam's reciting of some verses from the
Quran. This is called:
- pagbatya ng hotbatolnika, the reciting of
the appropriate verses for a wedding.
11. –The recitation mentions the five
pillars of Islam: worshiping God or
praying five times a day, giving alms
(zakat), fasting one month a year,
and if financially possible, going on
pilgrimage (hag).
12. DIALECT USED
–The Kagan language called "Kinagan" is the
native language of the tribe. Kinagan is also
related to Indonesian which some of the words
are similar to the Bahasa language.
–Other words are also influenced by the Arabic
language.
13. –Kagan are also known as multi-
lingual people since they can
speak 3 or more languages used in
communication to their
neighbouring tribes.
14. POPULATION
–There are aproximately 8,000 Kalagan
(Tagakaolo) living on the island
of Mindanao in the Philippines.
–139,000 total population in the
Philippines.
