Saint Rose of Lima was the first person from South America to be canonized as a saint. She was born in Lima, Peru in 1586 and was given the name Rosa by her mother because her face resembled a rose. Rose made vows of virginity to God and joined the Dominican congregation, spending her days working in an orchard and sewing at night. She dedicated herself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus before dying in Lima in 1617.
