This document discusses opportunities for linking climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in agroforestry systems. It finds that agroforestry can both help agricultural systems adapt to climate impacts like changing rainfall patterns and temperatures, as well as mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in vegetation and soils. The document estimates that agroforestry practices could be applied to 630 million hectares worldwide and have the potential to sequester hundreds of millions of tons of carbon annually by 2040. However, it notes that more research is still needed to better understand the synergies between adaptation and mitigation measures in land use and forestry.
