K to 12: Its Implications across the Curriculum
Focused on Private High School -- Miriam College High School
A lot of issues were raised about the implementation of K-12 in the Philippine education system. Many are worrying that it might not be effective. Others think that it won’t make any improvement. But in the case of Miriam College High school, they are looking positively for its results. Upon hearing both facts and opinions from a number of resources, the researchers think that its implementation can result in large benefits to the society of the Philippines and its citizens. There will be problems because of the changes in the curriculum but the researchers believe that Filipinos will cope up soon. They’ll learn, in no time, to make the best out of the skills they’ll acquire through the changes. Better education system will bring better and more responsible citizens. Better citizens will lead to a better country.
This new secondary education curriculum in effect is designed to continue pupil development started by PRODED. The same paper revealed research findings indicating a need to improve student performance in science, mathematics and communication arts and that ineffective teaching, inadequate facilities and instructional materials contribute to unsatisfactory student performance and finally the need to improve also policy-making and increase the internal efficiency of the system.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. What is k-12 curriculum
•
•
The enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program
seeks to provide for a quality 12 – year basic
education program that each Filipino is entitled to.
The new program was patterned from the K – 6 –
4 – 2 Model. This means that basic education
involves kindergarten, six years of elementary
education, four years of junior high school (Grades
7 – 10) and two years of senior high school
(Grades 11 – 12).
3. SALIENT FEATURES
•
•
•
•
•
•
Strengthening Early Childhood Education (Universal
Kindergarten)
Making the Curriculum Relevant to Learners (Contextualization
and Enhancement)
Ensuring Integrated and Seamless Learning (Spiral Progression)
Building Proficiency through Language (Mother tongue-Based
Multilingual Education)
Gearing Up for the Future (Senior High School)
Nurturing the Holistically Developed Filipino (College and
Livelihood Readiness, let Century Skills)
4. STRENGTHENING EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION (UNIVERSAL KINDERGARTEN)
•
•
Every Filipino child now has access to early
childhood education through Universal
Kindergarten. At 5 years old, children start
schooling and are given the means to slowly
adjust to formal education.
In Kindergarten, students learn the alphabet,
numbers, shapes, and colors through games,
songs, and dances, in their Mother Tongue.
5. MAKING THE CURRICULUM RELEVANT
TO LEARNERS (CONTEXTUALIZATION
AND ENHANCEMENT)
•
•
•
Examples, activities, songs, poems, stories, and illustrations
are based on local culture, history, and reality. This makes the
lessons relevant to the learners and easy to understand.
Students acquire in-depth knowledge, skills, values, and
attitudes through continuity and consistency across all levels
and subjects.
Discussions on issues such as Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
, Climate Change Adaptation, and Information &
Communication Technology (ICT) are included in the
enhanced curriculum.
6. BUILDING PROFICIENCY
THROUGH LANGUAGE (MOTHER
TONGUE-BASED MULTILINGUAL
EDUCATION)
•
•
Aside from the Mother Tongue, English and Filipino are
taught as subjects starting Grade 1, with a focus on oral
fluency. From Grades 4 to 6, English and Filipino are
gradually introduced as languages of instruction. Both
will become primary languages of instruction in Junior
High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS).
After Grade 1, every student can read in his or her
Mother Tongue. Learning in Mother Tongue also serves
as the foundation for students to learn Filipino and
English easily.
7. ENSURING INTEGRATED AND
SEAMLESS LEARNING (SPIRAL
PROGRESSION)
• Subjects are taught from the simplest concepts to more
complicated concepts through grade levels in spiral
progression. As early as elementary, students gain
knowledge in areas such as Biology, Geometry, Earth Science,
Chemistry, and Algebra. This ensures a mastery of
knowledge and skills after each level.
For example, currently in High School, Biology is taught in
2nd Year, Chemistry in 3rd Year, and Physics in 4th Year. In K
to 12, these subjects are connected and integrated from
Grades 7 to 10. This same method is used in other Learning
Areas like Math.
8. GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE
(SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL)
• Senior High School is two years of specialized
upper secondary education; students may
choose a specialization based on aptitude,
interests, and school capacity. The choice of
career track will define the content of the
subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and
12. SHS subjects fall under either the Core
Curriculum or specific Tracks.
9. CORE CURRICULUM
• There are seven Learning Areas under the Core
Curriculum. These are Languages, Literature,
Communication, Mathematics, Philosophy,
Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Current
content from some General Education subjects
are embedded in the SHS curriculum
10. TRACKS
•
•
Each student in Senior High School can choose among
three tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic track
includes three strands: Business, Accountancy,
Management (BAM); Humanities, Education, Social
Sciences (HESS); and Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics (STEM).
Students undergo immersion, which may include earn-
while-you-learn opportunities, to provide them relevant
exposure and actual experience in their chosen track.
11. TVET (TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL
EDUCATION & TRAINING)
NATIONAL CERTIFICATE
• After finishing Grade 10, a student can obtain
Certificates of Competency (COC) or a National
Certificate Level I (NC I). After finishing a
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track in Grade 12,
a student may obtain a National Certificate Level II
(NC II), provided he/she passes the competency-
based assessment of the Technical Education and
Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
12. NURTURING THE HOLISTICALLY
DEVELOPED FILIPINO (COLLEGE AND
LIVELIHOOD READINESS, 21ST CENTURY
SKILLS)
• After going through Kindergarten, the enhanced
Elementary and Junior High curriculum, and a
specialized Senior High program, every K to 12
graduate will be ready to go into different paths
– may it be further education, employment, or
entrepreneurship.
