1) The document discusses using electroplating on diamond substrates to manipulate nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers for applications in quantum optics and photonics.
2) The author aims to design planar transmission lines like spiral inductors on diamond to improve inductance and current flow, enhancing magnetic field delivery at the NV centers' resonant frequency of 2.87 GHz.
3) Finite element modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics is used to optimize the transmission line structure, which will then be fabricated using photolithography and electroplating.
The document discusses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and its use in characterizing materials. SEM uses an electron beam focused into a probe that scans over a sample, creating signals like secondary electrons and backscattered electrons. These signals are detected and used to form a magnified image of the sample's surface on a cathode ray tube. SEM provides higher magnification than light microscopes, with a greater depth of field. It is capable of elemental analysis and mapping at magnifications from around 10x to 300,000x, with typical operating ranges of 500eV-50keV beam energy.
The Customer OS - Why digital isn’t digital and customers hold the key to you...Helge Tennø
Helge Tennø discusses how digital technologies and changing customer needs are driving a "mutation" in capitalism.
1) Headlines about digital transformation lack context and explanation, while customers have changed more than the business organizations that must serve them.
2) New technologies enable new customer behaviors and goals that existing companies struggle to meet, representing a fundamental shift rather than just innovations.
3) As the environment changes from a "well-lit room" of predictability to a "dark room," companies must explore how technology enables new customer processes and values rather than just protecting old ones.

The cellular cytoskeleton is essential in proper cell function as well as in organism development. These polymers provide the elaborate roads along which most intracellular protein transport occurs. I will discuss several examples where mathematical modeling, analysis, and simulation tools help us study and understand the interactions between these filaments roads and motor proteins in cells. In neurons, neurofilaments navigate axons and their constrictions to maintain a healthy speed of neuronal communication. We develop stochastic models that may provide insights into transport mechanisms through axonal constrictions. In the reproductive system of the worm C. elegans, we use agent - based modeling to study how myosin motors interact with actin filaments to maintain contractile rings that allow passage and nutrient transport for developing egg cells. In addition, we have recently become interested in using topological data analysis tools to assess maintenance and establishment of these ring structures.

A universal challenge facing the development of electrochemical materials is our lack of understanding of physical and chemical processes at local length scales in 10-100 nm regime, and acquiring this understanding requires a new generation of imaging techniques that can resolve local chemistry and fast dynamics in electrochemical materials at the time and length scales relevant to strongly coupled reaction and transport phenomena. In this article, we introduce the scanning thermo-ionic microscopy (STIM) technique for probing local electrochemistry at the nanoscale, utilizing Vegard strain induced via thermal stress excitations for imaging. We have implemented this technique using both resistive heating through a microfabricated AFM thermal probe, as well as photo-thermal heating through a 405 nm laser, and have applied it to a variety of electrochemical materials. The dynamics of ionic motion can be captured from point-wise spectroscopy studies, while the spatial inhomogeneity can be revealed by STIM mapping. Since it utilizes thermal stress-induced oscillation as its driving force, the responses are insensitive to the electromechanical, electrostatic, and capacitive effects, and is immune to global current perturbation, making in-operando testing possible. In principle, STIM can provide a powerful tool for probing local electrochemical functionalities at the nanoscale.
Methods of Protein structure determination EL Sayed Sabry
This document summarizes several methods for determining protein structure: X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and cryo-electron microscopy. X-ray crystallography involves growing protein crystals, exposing them to X-rays to generate diffraction patterns, and using the patterns to build 3D electron density maps of the protein. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measures distances between atomic nuclei in soluble proteins by analyzing spectra from radiofrequency pulses applied in strong magnetic fields. Cryo-electron microscopy images frozen, hydrated protein samples with an electron microscope to determine large protein structures without the need for crystallization.

This document summarizes a study that used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect microsleep states from EEG data. The researchers compared using oversampling and cost-based learning techniques to address class imbalance when training the CNN models. They also compared using raw EEG data versus 2D maps of log power spectral features as the CNN input. The CNN models achieved high performance in detecting microsleep states, outperforming other machine learning methods. Using raw EEG data and cost-based learning provided the best combination of high performance and reduced training time. Future work could explore ensemble and parallel CNN architectures.

Searching of membrane target for circadian clockSSA KPI
1. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) regulates circadian rhythms in mammals and individual SCN neurons express self-sustained circadian oscillations that generate a coherent output signal.
2. The study examines whether spike-associated currents are the primary target responsible for circadian modulation of firing rates in SCN neurons.
3. The results suggest that subthreshold, voltage-dependent cation channels, which are active at resting potential and increase opening probability with depolarization, may be the key target mediating effects of the circadian clock on electrical firing rates in SCN neurons.
The effects of inter-cavity separation on optical coupling in dielectric bisp...Shashaanka Ashili
The optical coupling between two size-mismatched spheres was studied by using one sphere as a local source of light with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) and detecting the intensity of the light scattered by a second sphere playing the part of a receiver of electromagnetic energy. We developed techniques to control inter-cavity gap sizes between microspheres with ~30nm accuracy. We demonstrate high efficiencies (up to 0.2-0.3) of coupling between two separated cavities with strongly detuned eigenstates. At small separations (<1 μm) between the spheres, the mechanism of coupling is interpreted in terms of the Fano resonance between discrete level (true WGMs excited in a source sphere) and a continuum of “quasi”-WGMs with distorted shape which can be induced in the receiving sphere. At larger separations the spectra detected from the receiving sphere originate from scattering of the radiative modes.
The NOvA Test Beam Program aims to deploy a scaled-down version of the NOvA detectors at Fermilab's Test Beam Facility to expose it to a tertiary beam of pions, protons, muons and electrons. This will help address energy-related and detector response systematic uncertainties in NOvA's neutrino oscillation analyses. The test beam will directly measure the detector's muon, hadron and electromagnetic response, build a database of single particle events, and provide an independent calibration of the detector.
