6. Synopsis
The planning of my project is done according to the bye-laws given by the government and also
keeping in mind the Luis Kahn’s principle of the interconnection between the served and the
servant spaces.
In my plan, I have started planning from the main entrance gate where wooden planks with
pebbles are used and through which it lead to the paved area and car parking, bricks in herring
bone arrangement are used. The whole house is surrounded by the beautiful landscaping from all
the sides. The entrance stair is designed with wood and pebbles and is well lighted.
The house starts with the vestibule which is connected to two sitting zones that is the primary-the
informal living room and the other is the secondary i.e., the formal living room. The space is an
open space with different zones yet connected. The informal living room is connected to a corridor
kitchen and dining area which has corner windows. The primary living room is connected to a
library which has a beautiful view of the outside landscape. The secondary living is connected to
the outside sitting zone through a bifold door which has a view of landscaping. The kitchen is
connected to the deck area through a bifold door.
The ground floor is connected to the first floor through an open well stair. First floor has two
rooms- one master bedroom and other is children’s bedroom. It has a terrace garden and a
balcony too.
7. INTRODUCTION
Life will be beautiful when you create a right environment inside. A home which doubles as a
workspace may be someone’s dream. Designing is not just about making something on an empty
piece of paper or on an empty space. You have to wonder how you can create something that
takes the past and turns it into the future.
I am a student of Interior Designing doing my bachelors of science in Interior Designing and along
with this I am developing my technical skills by technical oriented diploma program of 2 years to
make myself industry friendly that is my subjection is of total 5 years in this field.
Earlier, nearly past 20 years ago, people were not concerned about designing their houses or any
other thing used in the house which makes their house look different. They only wanted a shelter
of their own without concerning about its beauty or their status in the society. But now, when
purchasing and spending power of people has increased, their status level is turning more to their
ego satisfaction, they are tending more towards designing in their house. They want their house to
speak their way of living and their personality. Home interiors are gaining more importance as it is
more than a lifestyle choice.
In addition to designing, people are more concerned about green homes. They want their homes
to contribute to nature. For that several points has to be paid attention which helps in making a
green home.
One of the most important points which I have paid attention to is BUILDING ENVELOPE. It is the
surrounding environment of a space through which the house is to be protected. Internal and
external environment of a house are not completely divided by a building envelope. They overlap a
series of layers, cycles and systems.
a) Repel rain water
b) Control water vapour
c) Retain heat or coolness and handle air transmission
To begin with the protection of the house, I have started with silver lock bond cavity walls. The
cavity inside acts as a bad conductor and will protect the walls of the house from heat, humidity
and noise to radiate it inside the house.
8. Apart from this, ventilation is also an Important points which is to be paid attention. Fresh air inside
the house will keep the person fresh and active, so proper ventilation needs to be there in the
house.
To design better air flow, we need to pay attention to a main fact that building envelope is a
complex interconnected mesh.
This diagram articulates the problem related to air that need to be addressed by the building
envelope; the variable factors of outside conditions- climate, orientation, adjacencies and time.
For proper ventilation, proper placement of doors and windows is done, so that a cross ventilation
can occur in the house. For this, clerestory windows are the best option to be taken as it helps in
stack effect of the wind.
Also, for proper air flow, sloppy roof is considered better so that a wind pressure and suction zone
is made which allows air to enter inside the house.
Day lighting and ventilation go hand in hand.
With proper placement of doors and windows we allow ample amount of sunlight to enter inside
the house.
Day lighting should be such, that first rays of morning sun stream in like a clarion call for their
occupants. As sun’s energy makes a person more active and increase its working efficiency. It
also helps to reduce the use of artificial lights in day time.
For proper day lighting, orientation of the house is to be studied which tells the amount of sunlight
coming from different direction.
Climatology, i.e., study of climate, of a space should also be paid attention. It is also responsible
for taking care of building and the residents of the buildings it tells the temperature and rainfall of a
space which helps in designing better.
For controlling the temperature of a space, landscaping is also a main factor.
Cross Ventilation
9. Landscape is the most powerful way of branding a project. It can reduce the outside temperature
by nearly 6° and inside temperature by nearly 12°.
Also, while planning, national byelaws are paid attention to so that proper air and sunlight can
enter into the house.
Apart from all these points, I was attracted towards the principle of Louis Kahn focusing on served
and servant space. He believed that the served areas should have the servant areas near to it so
that the functionality of the room increases.
Served spaces are living room and bedroom whereas servant spaces are kitchen, toilet, dinning
etc, except that heating, ventilation; A.C., aura in garden area, etc are also servant areas.
I have also paid attention to aspect and prospect of the building.
Keeping all these points in mind, I have divided my project into two parts, i.e., Structural part and
Interior part.
As if structural part is not paid attention, then it will merely interior decoration of the house. To
design a better house, proper structure of the house is needed.
For designing properly, I keep myself updated for different material through different magazines
like Inside Outside, Society Interiors, etc. I keep on going to different shops of materials; I attend
different shows like Inside Outside Mega Show, India Stone Mart, etc. All these things help very
much in updating me for different market materials.
Here, my project is divided into two parts:
Structural Part Interior Furnishing Parts
Foundation -Elements of Design
Boundary wall -Principles of Design
Water supply -Gestalt Principles
Drainage system -Concept Handling
Site selection
Doors and windows placement
Landscaping
Anti termite treatment
Fire protection
Damp proofing
Here, the building I have made is based on sustainable design. The building approach to
sustainability addresses five key areas of human and environment health-Sustainable site
development; Water saving; Energy Efficiency; Selection of material; and Indoor environment
quality.
In the subsequent pages, you will see all the above points incorporated in my plan.
10. Case Study
Design a residential layout for Mr.kamal Singh who is on higher post of the government. There are
4 members in the family, his wife and two children. The family loves socializing and meeting
people. They want a bungalow or a house which is more open with beautiful landscape around the
house. The family’s main preference is a terrace garden which should be a cozy sit out in the
house. The family is having a good lifestyle and is in the upper class living.
1) Mr. Kamal Singh
Age – 35 yrs
Occupation – On government posts
Need – open and connected space
2)Mrs. Palak Singh
Age – 32 yrs
Occupation – Teacher
Need – maintenance free house
3) Rahul Singh
Age – 14 yrs
Occupation– Student
Need – a studious room
4) Nikhil Singh
Age – 12 yrs
Occupation – Student
Need – a joyful room
11. Site Location
The space given to us for the site is 500yards2
that is equal to 4500sq.ft. The site is located in the civil line
which is in NE direction of Ajmer, Rajasthan with a landmark being Savitri College.
Distance of bus stop from site: 650m
Distance of Railway Station from site: 5.3km
40. Design Part
To design a space several things needs to be paid attention to like:
• Elements of design
• Principles of design
• Colour
• Textures
• Needs of the client
• Materials selection
• Concept
• Style
• Gestalt principle
43. The space which you see here of the living room has been planned and arrived after a lot of
brainstorming. I first studied about the basic methods how a person behaves, his activities and
working areas in this space. I am suppose to work out first with the efficient space planning of this
area and then move over to the design development of this area keeping into mind the concept
‘carnival’ towards which I got attracted to. To design an area is not easy, as we have to develop
the space aesthetically and simultaneously vibrant and enthusiastic space which helps to
coordinate all the activities performed.
After this space was decided with the planning, my next step was design. To design this space, I
had to focus the basic areas that are the structure in which my design is to be developed.
The areas are:
i. Walls
ii. Ceiling
iii. The vestibule part
iv. Stairs
v. Living room space
Regarding this I have made certain collages to get an idea of the space.
47. T o design my living room, the next step in my design development is the formation of the type of
concept chosen by me. Concept generation can be an empirical concept where we select the
concept that we can observe through our naked senses such as the colour, material type textures,
etc. in the abstract concept, we develop a design through feeling and mood.
In my project, I have selected the empirical concept where I resorted to the usage of my five
senses, eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue and the concept is “Indian Mela”. I am inspired from the
physical attributes of the concept.
The various textures, finishes and the feel of the various surfaces, the usages of fabrics used in
my design are all dependent on the development of the textures which I have researched and
devised from the concept picture of Indian Mela.
48. Indian Mela
Earlier I studied the whole concept of “Carnival” of Germany, but as I had to design a house for an
Indian client and an Indian is more attached to its mother earth and hence I decided to opt a
concept similar to carnival and therefore I switched to the fairs of India- “The Indian Mela”.
Mea is one of the best way to give an earthy feeling in the house and a best way to cherish your
mood and remembering your childhood.
Mela once upon a time used to be a community affair most awaited by the whole village folks
where youth mingled, women shopped, children enjoyed, mela set the ground for modern day mall
culture. For the women folk, mela would be the only time when they were allowed to step up out of
their houses for shopping and the colourful bangles were always a must buy. Mela is a perfect
place for all kinds of shopping. For children nothing can be better than a visit to the mela with
almost vender selling toys.
Mela has a lot of colours and material used in it which makes a space full of energy and
refreshment. The use of vibrant colours attracts people to visit it more.
The use of baskets, puppets, terracotta statues, colourful Diyas, colourful beads and jewellery,
toys of plastics, plastics masks, Laltens (oil lanterns), Firki , glittering farriyan, potter wheel for
making mud products, Rassi (rope ),bells , etc give a feeling of our old villages. These materials
have a lot of textures used in it.
50. Keeping this into mind an elaborate study was conducted by me through various books and
magazines, I visited many of the websites to study how the houses of the world were designed
and at the same time, houses of traditional Indian houses.
The first point which I had to pay attention here was my client. My client wanted a higher end
design layout where an elegant ambience could be developed with an addition of
sophisticatedness and at the same time freshness.
For this, I made collages of the various elements of the concept which I took “Indian Mela”. These
collages gave me ideas to select the colours, the textures and the feel, which I had to give to my
client’s house. The colors chosen for the room to be designed- living room- was dealt in the
following manner.
54. As per the plan of the living room, the space is a huge space with a lot of daylight pouring in with
excessive daylight from the southern sun where the stairs have been positioned, a lot of glare and
heat will be developed and when the light falls on the stairs and if we choose a shiny material for
the stair, the reflection will be more leading to tiredness. Because of so much of lightedness and
presence of glare, we need to bring down the space to a more softer and comfortable, friendly
space development. I prefer more of a friendly space development because this is the central part
of the house where the family will be spending more hours together.
The main challenge of this design area is that we are supposed to design two sitting zones, i.e.,
primary and secondary, at the same time, I want the space to be friendly and if I choose friendly, I
am supposed to use yellow and orange. These colours are opted by me because of the fact of the
concept “Indian Mela”. But these colours are not a right choice to be opted in the space provided
to me because these colours will generate more heat and the space will not appear friendly
because of the high amount of daylight. I have to take dark colours, so that I can subdue the glare
of the space.
Keeping these points in mind, I resorted to refreshing colours as these colours include cool blue
and green paired with red-orange, blue green or teal. Refreshing colours sparkle with lightness
along with providing a sense of calmness. These colours are also present in the concept chosen
by me, i.e. Indian Mela, the colours of the rural village.
The textures that can be utilized in my design can be a variety of textures. As the room size is big,
I can use rough textures, coarse textures, which are more advancing along with the usage of soft,
shiny, fluffy, sheer and bright accessories and artifacts with the lighting choice being more usage
of incandescent light and cool light.
57. My Design
I have given the name of my project as NOSTALGIA. As my concept is ‘Indian mela’ and it is a
place which cherish a person by its name only. It is full of colours and energy. A person
remembers all his past memories by hearing about Indian mela.
It is a place where all the old things are renewed and then sold. It is a place where children have
their best time of enjoying. All this inspires me to give my project this name.
In my design, I have taken materials keeping in mind the concept Indian mela and at the same
time the style-contemporary.
Starting from the vestibule, I have taken copper rods and the rods are hanged with rope by a
copper ring which is fixed in the ceiling. The rods are hanged in a proper proportion keeping into
mind the principal of design. The rods are hanged on both the sides of a half length mirror which in
level of the door. The rods are hanged in such a manner that they are following gestalt’s principle-
law of common fate. Below this there are small plants through which up lighter are highlighting the
rods this all follow the law of symmetry. The wall behind this is taken as rough texture as to
complement the smooth polished rods with a Sahara sunset (a shade of vermillion colour) and
dark coloured flooring has been taken.
I have taken dark colours in the vestibule because it is a place where a person spends the least
time and as it at the entrance, it should give warmth and welcoming feeling to the person coming
and also it is in the SE direction.
Passing by the vestibule, then comes the stair and the secondary living room area.
I have taken dark colours stone on the stair as it has a lot of glare and it has to be subdued. Above
stair, lights are hanged from the ceiling and below that plants and pebbles are used to create a
look.
Moving towards the secondary living room, I have taken wooden flooring to give a warmth feeling
and a very fuchsia colours of smooth texture is taken on the wall. The wall has casement windows
with fanlight above it as it is in the NW direction and less sunlight will be there, so to gain more
light, fan lights are taken up. The ceiling here is pitched ceiling with bamboos and light fixed in
above it. There is a wooden partition between the stair and the living room.
From the secondary living room, there is an opening to outside through a bifold door, which has a
sitting area having a view of the outside landscaping.
