This document discusses copyright myths and basics, including that anything found online is not automatically in the public domain, works can be copyrighted even without a notice, and fair use does not mean anything can be used for educational purposes. It outlines author rights under copyright law and exceptions for U.S. government works and works before 1923 being in the public domain. For WashU, faculty own copyright to their works while staff and student works are owned by the university. The four factors of fair use are discussed as well as special exceptions for libraries and archives and education under copyright law. Resources for copyright guidance at WashU are provided.
