Effect Of Structured Teaching programme on
knowledge regarding gestational diabetes mellitus
among antenatal mothers admitted in selected
hospitals of jalandhar (punjab)
 According to WHO gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is
defined as carbohydrate intolerance resulting in
hyperglycaemia during of variable severity with its onset of
first recognition during pregnancy.
 According to WHO GDM in India is to be around 40.9 million
in 2006 which is expected to rise to69.9 million by the time
2025.
 Under World Diabetes Foundation Project prevalence of
GDM was 17.8 % in urban, 13.8 % in semi urban and 9.9
% in rural areas while it was 10% in Punjab.
1. To assess the pre-test knowledge regarding GDM among
antenatal mothers.
2. To develop and administer the structure teaching programme
regarding GDM among antenatal mothers.
3. To assess the post test knowledge regarding GDM among
antenatal mothers.
4. To compare the pre test and post test knowledge
regarding GDM among antenatal mothers.
5. To determine the association between post test
knowledge regarding GDM with the selected socio-
demographic variables of antenatal mothers.

Method
•A brief introduction about research study was given to the
samples.
•Data on socio-demographic variables has been collected
from 60 antenatal mothers and pre-test was done to assess
their knowledge regarding GDM by using Self Structured
Questionnaire.
•Post- test was done to assess their knowledge regarding
GDM by using Self Structured Questionnaire.
 Socio-demographic variables were analysed by using
frequency and percentage.
 Assessment of pretest and post test knowledge of
antenatal mothers by using frequency, mean and standard
deviation.
 Comparison of pretest and post test knowledge by using
paired ‘t’ test.
 Association between the socio demographic variables of
post test knowledge by using paired ‘t’ test and ANOVA.
RESULTS
 Majority of the antenatal mothers 56.67% belonged to the age group
21-25yrs.
 30% of antenatal mothers belonged to the age group 26-30 years.
 6.66% antenatal mothers belonged to the age group below 20 years.
 93.33% had less than one week stay in the hospital.
 Only 6.67% antenatal mothers had more than 1 week stay in the
hospital.

knowledge.

knowledge.
Post test
• 1.66% of antenatal
mother had below
average knowledge of
GDM
• 86.67 % had average
knowledge
• 11.67 % had above
average knowledge.
The structured teaching programme improved the
knowledge of antenatal mothers, which is concluded by
difference in pre test and post test knowledge scores.
It is also influenced by demographic variables and stay in
hospital.

  • 3.  According to WHO gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as carbohydrate intolerance resulting in hyperglycaemia during of variable severity with its onset of first recognition during pregnancy.  According to WHO GDM in India is to be around 40.9 million in 2006 which is expected to rise to69.9 million by the time 2025.
  • 4.  Under World Diabetes Foundation Project prevalence of GDM was 17.8 % in urban, 13.8 % in semi urban and 9.9 % in rural areas while it was 10% in Punjab.

Data collectio n Method •A brief introduction about research study was given to the samples. •Data on socio-demographic variables has been collected from 60 antenatal mothers and pre-test was done to assess their knowledge regarding GDM by using Self Structured Questionnaire. •Post- test was done to assess their knowledge regarding GDM by using Self Structured Questionnaire.
  • 13.  Socio-demographic variables were analysed by using frequency and percentage.  Assessment of pretest and post test knowledge of antenatal mothers by using frequency, mean and standard deviation.  Comparison of pretest and post test knowledge by using paired ‘t’ test.  Association between the socio demographic variables of post test knowledge by using paired ‘t’ test and ANOVA.
  • 15.  Majority of the antenatal mothers 56.67% belonged to the age group 21-25yrs.  30% of antenatal mothers belonged to the age group 26-30 years.  6.66% antenatal mothers belonged to the age group below 20 years.  93.33% had less than one week stay in the hospital.  Only 6.67% antenatal mothers had more than 1 week stay in the hospital.
