4. Introduction
• Stress is a state of physical and psychological strain
Which imposes demands for adjustments upon the
individual.
• Low or moderate levels of stress may enhance students’
motivation, leading to greater perseverance when
studying and achieving future (Gibbon et al., 2010 )
• Effective coping strategies help students to achieve
markedly better in regards to their studies and aid in
relieving their stress (Shah M et al.,2010)

5. Specific objectives
• To assess the perception of stress by First Year Nursing
Students in Alpha Higher Institute Deido Douala
• To identify the causes of stress among First Year Nursing
Students in Alpha Higher Institute Deido Douala
• To bring out the Coping Strategies frequently use by First
Year Nursing Students in Alpha Higher Institute Deido
Douala relieve their stress

6. Methods
Study area: AHIBTS Deido Douala
Study design: A cross sectional design.
Target population: first year HND nursing students
Sample size: 70 student nurses.
Sampling method: convenient sampling technique.
Data collection: questionnaires.
Study period: November 2020 to September 2021.
Data Analysis: SPSS and presented on tables and figures.

7. Results
Overall 63.8% had positive perception while 36.2% had
negative perception.
Prominent stressors were, lack of time 55.1%, lack of
finance 68.1%, long hour of study 69.6%, CA 76.8% and
increase work load 62.3%.
Common coping strategies were setting of objectives
76.8%, physical exercises76.8%, past experience 82.6%
saving time for adequate sleep 76.8%

8. Discussion
Overall positive perception similar to (Elia KM et al.,
2020), Participants may perceive stress differently based on
experience, also on when the data was collected.
Prominent stressors were, similar to (Naidoo et al., 2014),
Juniors are expected to achieve knowledge and experience,
and are given additional responsibilities.
Common coping strategies were not similar to (Shaban et
al., 2014), who found that avoidance was the most
common. Avoidance is only a temporary measure and not a
maintainable solution to address underlying stressor

9. Conclusion
• There was an overall positive perception of stress among
first year HND nursing students at AHIBTS.
• The major causes of stress was due to lack of time, lack of
finance, CA and long hours of studies.
• Common coping strategies were setting objectives,
physical exercises, usage of past experience, adequate
sleeping time.

10. Recommendations
• Schools should Conduct workshops on stress and effective
coping strategies, presence of counselors on campus may
help students.
• Teachers orientation of new students should include
common stressors and how to handle them.
• Parents should pay children feels on time and also create
time to talk with them base on their challenges.
• Students should open up to their parents and teachers base
on their stressors.
