Hi, I’m Jane Lamberti and I handle traumatic brain injury cases here in Georgia. And a common question that I get asked all the time is whether a concussion is the same as a mild traumatic brain injury.
Well, the answer to that is, a concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. Think about it. The human brain weighs at least 3 pounds and it’s in a hard shell, our skull, and within these 3 pounds, we have over 600 miles of neurons, brain cells, and they have multiple connections. There are over a quadrillion connections in our brain. Think about that, quadrillion connections. So even a minor jarring, if you’re in a car accident or if you get hit with an object, you don’t even have to have a mark on the outside. Your brain could move forward and backwards within your skull or hit your skull, disrupt some of those connections and that’s what causes a concussion.

Hi, I'm Jane Lamberti, Georgia's brain injury attorney. Many of my clients ask me, “If I'm rear-ended but I haven't hit my head on the steering wheel or the dashboard, how can I have a brain injury?”
Well, remember, the brain while it weighs three pounds, it's inside a skull and when you get hit with forces from behind, that brain can move forward and backwards into the skull and get injured because remember, the brain is made up of tiny little cells called "neurons". They measure 600 miles if you were to connect them from end to end and there's over four quadrillion connections within those cells.
So, any kind of acceleration and deceleration and movement of the brain can cause a brain injury and it can be mopped. You can have a mild-traumatic brain injury but it can be very damaging to you especially if you've had concussions before. If you get injured again, it can make the damage even worse or sometimes, permanent.
So, be careful. If you've been on a car accident or trucking accident and although you may never have directly hit your head, you still could have suffered a concussion or a brain injury. So, call us, The Cochran Firm.

Today we will reflect on the problem some of us may face, What will happen when we call the police to do a wellness check on a neighbor who possibly is suffering from dementia?
My perspective is from the perspective of a volunteer officer of an over-55 condominium association. Indeed, determining whether a resident is simply being difficult or whether they are in the early stages of dementia can be difficult.
One warning sign of dementia is the elderly can no longer handle their financial affairs. If someone who has been paying their bills, including condominium maintenance fees, for decades is suddenly delinquent, could that be a warning sign for dementia?
Another warning sign is puzzling and/or abusive behavior, or sexually inappropriate behavior.
Often, the demented are combative through frustration, or literally because they lose the presence of mind to fix their meals when they should, or go to the doctor, and they may have urinary tract problems.
Can we blame those suffering from dementia for their demented behavior? Are those suffering from dementia responsible for their actions?
What training do the police undergo to deal with citizens with mental health issues, including dementia?

FAQ ABOUT HOMELESS VETERANS
Who are homeless veterans?
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, with roughly 9% being female. The majority are single; live in urban areas; and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans.
Roughly 45% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% of the U.S. veteran population, respectively.
Homeless veterans are younger on average than the total veteran population. Approximately 9% are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 41% are between the ages of 31 and 50. Conversely, only 5% of all veterans are between the ages of 18 and 30, and less than 23% are between 31 and 50.
America’s homeless veterans have served in World War II, the Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF), and the military’s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America. Nearly half of homeless veterans served during the Vietnam era. Two-thirds served our country for at least three years, and one-third were stationed in a war zone.
About 1.4 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
How many homeless veterans are there?
Although flawless counts are impossible to come by – the transient nature of homeless populations presents a major difficulty – the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given night.

- 3. •These positions place an incredible amount of stress on individuals, and many may feel like they have nowhere to turn. Public safety employees established Safe Call Now to provide a network of supporters who understand the singular demands of these taxing jobs and offer the necessary help. Those in the public safety sector have an incredible responsibility to their communities, protecting life and property.
- 4. •Any personal problems, such as divorce, financial struggles, or trouble sleeping, compound the pressures of these jobs, which may lead to an unhealthy mental state. For this reason, public safety employees and their families should learn the warning signs of psychological trauma and take immediate action when they notice them. - 6. •For example, police officers in California are more likely to lose their lives to suicide than die in the line of duty. In fact, the suicide rate among police officers is three times greater than that of the general public.
