Dear friends and colleagues,
With pride, I welcome you to Matters Academy’s booklet, "Why The Ocean Matters".
Hong Kong and our surrounding seas have provided us with a livelihood for generations. We have achieved international importance because of our relationship with the ocean. Our Fragrant Harbour and our bond to the Greater Bay Area are home to more than 30 million people and play an ever-expanding role in global development.
We rely on the oceans for food, transportation, and recreation. And yet, our oceans are under substantial threat. How can we not put our concern on the ocean and our future?
World Ocean Day is upcoming on 8 June. We take this opportunity to commemorate World Ocean Day by this booklet sharing the work of ten leading individuals and their organizations affecting ocean change in Southeast Asia.
We celebrate and dive into the work of Ocean Warriors, Thailand Manta Project, saving corals in the Philippines, OceansAsia, the Shark Foundation, Conservation of Green Sea Turtles, Bloom Association in HK, and CITES Enforcement.
We also provide the latest insights on underwater ecology: how do fish feel? What do they know? the benefits of the ocean ecosystem, fish stock depletion, and coral reef ecology.
Lastly, let's work toward the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 14, Life Below Water, to embark on our journey echoing "Why The Ocean Matters".
Welcome.

Alongside other volunteer efforts, John Schorsch is a self-defense instructor for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). The NFB provides many services for the visually-impaired and people losing their vision, and advocates for these groups.
The NFB was founded in 1940 by visually-impaired people from seven states. In its constitution the NFB states its purpose: to promote the social and economic independence of the visually-impaired, and to advocate for policies benefiting them at the federal level. Through their advocacy, they aim to demonstrate blind people’s equal rights and capabilities relative to sighted people, and how only blind people themselves can speak on behalf of the community and its needs.
The NFB offers resources including independent living skills training, accessible versions of print media, and publications for the blind and their advocates. The Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research is the first scholarly journal operated by visually-impaired people that discusses blindness from a nonmedical, interdisciplinary perspective. 1. Visually impaired English tech executive Chris Mairs receives credit for the creation of a device that helps blind skiers navigate through the water. In 1999, Mairs created the Audio Slalom Signal Generator (ASSG), a device that provides the angular measurement of the rope to the boat’s path. The ASSG sends a tone to the blind skier after pulling far enough to the outside to make a turn around a buoy.
2. Blind water skier Gerald Price and blind speed boat driver Mark Threadgold hold the record for the fastest blind team on the water. In October 2004, the pair crossed Lake Windermere at a speed of 46.2 mph. This partnership is also the first case of “a blind leading the blind” in water skiing.
3. English IT engineer Steve Thiele holds the Guinness World Record for the longest water skiing distance by a blind skier. He attempted to cover the area around Anglesey island in Wales, estimated at 70 miles. Although Thiele covered a distance of 23.85 miles, he was able to overcome the previous record of 20 miles.

2. INTRODUCTION
Jon Schorsch previously served as a sergeant with the Port of
Seattle Police Department. In that capacity, Jon Schorsch
oversaw numerous dive-and-boat team marine operations as
well as search and rescue operations for people lost at sea.
If you are an avid sailor, the threat of getting lost at sea is real.
Here are a few survival tips to remember if this should ever
happen to you:
- Find fresh water to drink. Sea or ocean water is salty and
bad for consumption, since it speeds up dehydration and
causes illness. Try to capture rainwater instead. If you have a
jacket, remove the hood and use it to collect rainwater. If you
don't have a jacket, use your shirt or any fabric to collect
rainwater and then wring it into a container or your boots.
3. LOST AT SEA
- Find food. Fish often hover at the bottom of boats, attracted
to the shadows they cast. Use a paracord as fishing line. You
could also use any string including shoe strings. Use shiny
objects like jewelry as bait, and any available metal wire for a
hook. Hang the line out the side of the boat to catch fish. Use
any uneaten fish guts as bait.
- Beware of sharks. Sharks don’t feed on humans but they do
bite. If a shark comes at you, use a sharp object or your fist to
strike its nose or eyeballs.
- Rescue. If you spot a ship or plane, use your smartphone or a
mirror to reflect sunlight its way. On a sunny day, the reflection
can be seen up to 10 miles away.
