Directors are in charge of making all the creative decisions, they are
responsible for selecting the music video's cast, giving direction and
overseeing rehearsals to the music artists, cast members and the crew. They
also select music-based scripts and treatments and coordinate with set
designers, costume designers and make-up artists. They help others on set
for example they might make a story board to help the camera person so
he/she knows exactly what they have to do. Directors instruct everyone else
on the set and help them out with what exactly to do. A music director may
be the director of an orchestra, music for a film, music at a radio station, the
head of a music department.
Camera operators work with directors to decide the overall goals
for the production. They record the images used to entertain
audiences. They follow the director's instructions for shot
angles, they would usually have storyboard drawn for them so
they’re able to easily see what to get on camera and what shot they
have to use, but they often have one or more assistants that they
give directions to, so they also have some leadership
responsibilities. They some times help the sound operator so he/she
doesn’t get in the way of the camera, for example if the microphone
gets caught in the camera. They will also decide on using different
camera techniques for example; Zoom in/out. He/she will also use
different camera angles for example; Long shots, close
ups, extreme close ups and cross cutting this is to make the video
more interesting and etc… They have to make sure everything on
camera is in focus and they don’t catch anything they’re not meant
to on screen.
Sound operators work closely with the Camera person because they
have to make sure none of there equipment gets in the way of the
camera for example; the microphone. They also need to make sure
the sound is at the right pitch.
They are responsible for all the sound related aspects of a
theatrical performance. This job may include operating a mixing
console and sound reinforcement system, as well as coordinating
sound effects and mixing microphones. They report to the sound
designer, stage manager, and director. They have to make sure
nothing gets in the way of the sound in the background and you’re
only able to hear what you’re meant to.
The lighting person would work with the director, the director would
help them with what sort of lightning they would want and etc… He/she
would place different types of lights and etc. around the room to make
sure there is enough light that is needed. They might also include some
different colour lights to cause effects, for example if it is a rock music
video it would mainly have darkish colours and maybe some reds, where
as if it was a R’n’B music video their tends to be a lot more lights and it
can be a lot more colourful. They would have to make sure the lights
are turned on when they are needed and off when they aren’t. They
would also have to make sure the lights are out of the camera persons
way just like the Sound operator would, because the camera person
wouldn’t want any of the others equipment in shot. The lighting can also
have storyboards written out for them, so they know which lights to put
on and how bright to put them etc… Majority of the time they have a
script which tells them what lighting they have to use.
