Jesus Leaves Judea
(Matthew, Mark and Luke make no mention of these events.)
John
4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus
made and baptized more disciples than John,
4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
4:3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
4:1 When thereforethe Lord knew…
John 2
25 And needed not that any shouldtestify of man: for he knew what was
in man.
John 3
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlastinglife: and he that believeth
not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Heb 4
13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all
things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to
do.
4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus
made and baptized more disciples than John,
“Lord”a kingly title of authority:
Zacchaeus:
Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the
half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any
man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Thief on the cross:
Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest
into thy kingdom.
Peter:
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God
hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Paul:
Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus
whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick againstthe pricks. KJV
Acts 26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom
thou persecutest.
Your salvation confession:
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and
shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raisedhim from the dead, thou
shalt be saved.
God is not fooled by flattery:
Matt 7:22-23 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesiedin thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy
name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I
never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus
made and baptized more disciples than John,
The Pharisees noted Jesus fame:
John 2
23 Now when he was in Jerusalemat the passover, in the feast day, many
believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
Mark 12
37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son?
And the common people heard him gladly.
John the Baptist is being replacedby Jesus inthe eyes of the people:
John 3
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with
thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same
baptizeth, and all men come to him.
Woman at the Well
(Matthew, Mark and Luke make no mention of these events.)
John 4:3-4
4:3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
Jesus follows the order of his later commission(Acts 1:8)
Christ goes to Jerusalem (2:23)
Judea (3:22)
Samaria (4:4)
Galilee “of the nations” (Isa.9:1, Mat. 4:15)
John 4:5-9
4:5 Then comethhe to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to
the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
4:6 Now Jacob's wellwas there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with [his]
journey, sat thus on the well: [and] it was about the sixth hour.12 noon (the
morning hour starts at6A.M.
4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her,
Give me to drink.
4:8 (For his discipleswere gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
4:9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a
Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have
no dealings with the Samaritans.
4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for
salvation is of the Jews.
When national salvation comes (Luke 1:31-33;1Sam.2:4-10), it
comes to the Jewish capital of Israel (Ps. 1; Isa 2, 65-66;Joel 3;
Zech. 14) by a Jewish King from the tribe of Judah (Gen. 49; 2Sam.
7; Ps110)
It comes aftera fake “Christ” professing to be “God manifestin the
flesh” (2Thes.2; Dan. 11) takes the throne, only to be dethroned by
military combat (Joel3; Rev. 19)
“How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of
Samaria?”
Two times Jesus asked for water and never received it. But on both
occasions He ends up giving the living water; interestingly the Title
“Saviour of the world” is only used twice; once in this story (John
4:42, and 1John 4:14).
Jesus avoids the trap of a racial argument and points her to
HIMSELF the gift of God and the living water.
John 4:10-12
4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God,
and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked
of him, and he would have given thee living water.
4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and
the well is deep:from whence then hast thou that living water?
4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and
drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Living water (v10) This is not a new concept:
Jer 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have
forsaken me the fountain of livingwaters, and hewed them out cisterns,
broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Jer 17:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be
ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth,
because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of livingwaters.
Zech 14:8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out
from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them
toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
Joshua 24:32 Shechem is central Samaria
Where the Ark of the Covenant ended up (Judg. 18:31)
The Mountain she will mention (vs 20) is Mt. Ephraim:
Where Joshua (Jesus Act. 7:45) was buried.
4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob
John 4:13-14
4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoeverdrinketh of this water
shall thirst again:
4:14 But whosoeverdrinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never
thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water
springing up into everlasting life.
If you die without the living water you opportunity to obtain water is
over (Luke 16:24)
4:14 But whosoever drinkethof the water that I shall give
It is only available as a gift to anyone humble enough to acceptit
(Rom. 4:5, 5:16, 6:23, Titus 3:5, Eph. 2:8-9)
John 4:15-16
4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not,
neither come hither to draw.
4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
Jesus confronts her open sin problem. Why did he go there? Her
husband has nothing to do with her receiving a free gift. To accept
the gift of God you must come to the light and when you do your
“deeds” are made manifest.
John 3:19-20 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into
the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their
deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light,
neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 4:17-18
4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto
her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not
thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
Heb 13:4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but
whoremongers andadulterers God will judge.
1Cor 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be
judged.
Prov 6:30-31 30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his
soul when he is hungry; 31 But if he be found, he shall restore
sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold,
Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any
thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
John 4:19
4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
1Cor 14:24-25 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that
believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convincedof all, he is judged of
all: 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so
fallingdown on his face he will worshipGod, and report that God is
in you of a truth.
John 4:20-23
4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in
Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye
shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation
is of the Jews.
4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall
worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to
worship him.
Dan 9:25-26 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the
going forth of the commandment to restore and to buildJerusalem
unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore
and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in
troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall
Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince
that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end
thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations
are determined.
John 4:24-28
4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit
and in truth.
4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is
called Christ: when he is come,he will tell us all things.
4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he].
4:27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with
the woman: yet no man said, What seekestthou? or, Why talkest thou with
her?
4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and
saith to the men,
“left her waterpot” She had eternal water no longer needed this
worlds temporary illusion of satisfaction.
John 4:29-42
4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this
the Christ?
4:30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the
saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
4:40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besoughthim that
he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
4:41 And many more believed because of his own word;
4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying:
for we have heard [him] ourselves, and know that this is indeed the
Christ, the Savior of the world.
John 4:31-38
4:31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know notof.
4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man broughthim
[ought] to eat?
4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to
finish his work.
4:35 Say notye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh harvest? behold, I
say unto you, Liftup your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to
harvest.
4:36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruitunto life eternal:
that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
4:38 I sent you to reap thatwhereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured,
and ye are entered into their labours.
John 4:43
4:43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
