The storm on the sea of galilee
1. The storm on the sea of galilee
Mat. 8:23-27, Luke 8:22-25
Mark 4
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us
pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent awaythe
multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also
with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and
the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the
hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say
unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and
rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind
ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are
ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared
exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that
even the wind and the sea obey him?
Vs 35 This was not a discussion vs36 Hewas already in the ship. (Mat8:19-22,23-
24)
Vs36 They sent the multitude away He gave no command for the people.
Vs40-41 They gotwhat they wanted the wind and sea became calm.
Why the fear their problems were answered?
The problem was lack of faith (which is fear) not the wind and sea; after the wind
and sea werenot a problem they still had fear, the answer to both was FAITH.
The Feeding of the 5,000 and the 4,000
The feeding of the 5000 is the only miracle of Jesus describedby all four gospels
(Matt. 14:13-21, Mark 6, Luke 9:10-17, andJohn 6:1-14). It signaledthe endof
Jesus'Galileanministry that lastedabout twoyears. When he refusedtobe
their earthly king, they lost interest anddesertedhim(John6:66). After the
feeding of the 5000 Jesus visitedPhoenicia, Decapolis, Caesarea-Philippi, and
Judea.
2. Luke 9
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had
done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place
belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
3. Matt 16
5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten
to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the
leaven of the Pharisees andof the Sadducees. 7 And they reasoned among
themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8 Which when
Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye
among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet
understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and
how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four
thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11 How is it that ye do not
understandthat I spake it not to you concerningbread, that ye should
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees andof the Sadducees? 12 Then
understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of
bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees andof the Sadducees.
Mark 8
19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets
full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the
seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye
up? And they said, Seven.
The feeding of the five thousand
Mark 6
30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him
all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. 31 And he
said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a
while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so
much as to eat. 32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot
thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. 34
And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with
4. compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not havinga
shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. 35 And when the day
was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert
place, and now the time is far passed: 36 Send them away, that they may go
into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves
bread: for they have nothing to eat. 37 He answeredand said unto them,
Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two
hundredpennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? 38 He saith unto
them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they
say, Five, and two fishes. 39 And he commanded them to make all sit down
by companies upon the green grass. 40 And they sat down in ranks, by
hundreds, and by fifties. 41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the
two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and
gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided
he among them all. 42 And they did all eat, and were filled. 43 And they
took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. 44 And they
that did eat of the loaves were about five thousandmen.
Christ walks on the sea
45 And straightwayhe constrainedhis disciples to get into the ship, and to
go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he
alone on the land. 48 And he saw them toilingin rowing; for the wind was
contraryunto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh
unto them, walkingupon the sea, and would have passed by them. 49 But
when they saw him walkingupon the sea, they supposed it had been a
spirit, and cried out: 50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And
immediatelyhe talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it
is I; be not afraid. 51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind
ceased: and they were sore amazedin themselves beyond measure, and
wondered. 52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for
their heart was hardened. 53 And when they had passed over, they came
into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

Mark 7
31 And again, departingfrom the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto
the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
The name given to the region occupied by a league of ‘ten cities’ The names of the
traditional Ten Cities of the Decapolis come from the Roman historian Pliny the
Elder (N.H. 5.16.74). They are:

(Mt 4:25; Mk 5:20; 7:31). The Greek inhabitants were never on good terms with the
Jews; and the herd of swine (Mk 5:11) indicates contempt for what was probably
regarded as Jewish prejudice.”
Mark 8
1 In those days the multitude being very great, and havingnothing to eat,
Jesus calledhis disciples unto him, and saith unto them, 2 I have
compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three
days, and have nothingto eat: 3 And if I send them away fastingto their
own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. 4
And his disciples answeredhim, From whence can a man satisfy these men
with bread here in the wilderness? 5 And he asked them, How many loaves
have ye? And they said, Seven. 6 And he commanded the people to sit
down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and
brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them
before the people. 7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and
commanded to set them also before them. 8 So they did eat, and were
filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. 9
And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them
7. away. 10 And straightwayhe entered into a ship with his disciples, and
came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
