Jamara visited Victoria Baths to photograph marbles and bubbles in various locations around the historic building. Some of the best spots included the male baths where bubbles worked well, the committee room where depth of field was used on marbles on a window ledge, and the basement where low light brought out colors in bubbles. While focusing on marbles and bubbles, Jamara also took some architectural photos of hallways and empty baths to capture the historic character of the building.

• Matthew Owens is a Freelance Designer.
• The photo to me looks like a representation of a galaxy as the
composition of the marbles are lay out in a particular way. It
could also represent planets revolving around the sun as the
red marble seems to be surrounded by the rest. This could also
be seen as a gathering of the marbles implying it could be a
representation of people gathering round the main person. The
picture has a narrow field of light that looks like its almost
shining directly above the marbles; so it focuses on the centre
of marbles rather than the outside of them which has low key
lighting. The dark framed edges helps highlight the marbles in
the light making them stand out on the outer layer of marbles.
I like how the photographer has chosen different coloured
marbles for the photograph as it shows how each different
coloured marble reacts to the light shining on it. I like how the
light shines one particular area of the marbles composition as
it creates a great photograph. The photo uses depth of field
and focuses on the centre, blurring at the foreground.

to rearrange the composition of the marbles and how much
light to use and where to shine the light to create fantastic

5. Neil Barnett
• Neil Barnett is an amateur artist/ photographer on the
website deviant art.
• The photograph shows the marbles lined up on a
bench. I like how the photographer has captured the
light in the marbles so they look different colours. The
use of depth of field helps us focus on the middle of
the marbles rather that the closest or furthest, which
makes the photo look professional. It also allows us to
focus on the colour which is a very prominent aqua
blue. The lighter background allows us to focus on the
marbles better as the photographer uses natural light.
He captures the light well through the marbles and
also shows the reflection of the light on the top of
each marble.
• This photograph informs my work as, I too have
manipulated light and reflections with marbles. I will
also try and capture the light as wells as he does in his
photograph.

6. Contact sheet college photos
This was mainly background composition or leading lines. I tried to focus on what’s in the frame and what it leads
up to. I think the marbles worked best because they worked well with the reflection of the light off them. I think I
will continue with marbles and light reflection because its seems to be the best one.

7. Contact sheet home photos
These were mainly composition as well. Because I am interested in colour and lights, using different types of lights I
have arranged the marbles in a certain composition so the light reflects off them to make good photos. I used different
camera shots such as depth of field and framing to make my work. My favourite ones are the photos that look like
Matthew Owens work where the composition of the marbles are layout to look like they are gathering round for a
meeting.

9. Microsoft publisher editing experiments
All I have done here is done different trials with the publisher tools, using the brightness and contrast tool. I have also used the
recoloring tool to make the photo black and white and monochrome, experimenting with that using contrast and brightness over it.
I have experimented with the lightness and darkness of the photo as I liked Matthew Owens style of using the light and the dark to
highlight he marbles. To improve I could not over edit like I have done here as it doesn’t look as good.

10. Photoshop experimenting
I have used the magnetic lasso tool to take out
two of the marbles so they will be the main
focus of the picture. Then I change the rest to
black and white to make the two marbles stand
out.

11. I have experimented with the
vibrancy of the photos to see
how that would turn out.
I like the vibrancy but it looks
to over edited so I will not be
using it.
I liked how Neil Barnett had quite
bright coloured marbles in the
photo so I used vibrancy to get a
similar effect.

12. The picture I have taken here is interesting. The way
the marbles are reflected in the glass helped make
the edited version look even better. I was inspired by
Neil Barnett’s photograph as the marbles in his phot
had prominent colours so I used curves to change the
colour making the marbles glow and shine making
them look like pearls on necklaces. I like this very
much and will consider taking marbles in water as a
theme in unit two.
This photo is one of the best I took as the
composition is just right and it has a shadowed
border. The editing is not as successful as the
photo as I used the magic wand tool to merge the
carpet together to make the marbles stand out in
the middle. However all that did was highlight the
background which is not what I aimed for.

13. These four photos are the best out of all
the ones I took. I feel I can develop on
these images on the next unit as some of
the editing worked well and could be
possible ideas for my final out come.

17. Richard Heeks
• Richard Heeks is a bubble photographer who spends
hours taking unusual photos of bubbles.
• The photograph of the bubble is a great piece of work.
The way he captures his reflection in a bubble is really
amazing. The colours highlight the reflection well as it
make it looks like an old style photo due to the sepia style
colouring in the bubble. The use of framing helps capture
his reflection inside the bubble making his reflection the
main focus of the photograph. The photo looks really
professional as the photographer spends hours trying to
get the perfect picture. The use of natural lighting
enhances the colours of the bubble as if it was unnatural
lighting E.g. flash it wouldn’t work very well as you
wouldn’t see any reflection and the colours would be
bright and exaggerated.

20. I like what I have done here with the curve as it looks
like Richard Heeks work making his work inform mine. It
works very well as it looks like a sepia colouring or a
lomography style photo.
I have used vibrance to bring out the colour in the classes while
trying to avoid changing much colour on my subjects face. I like the
effect on the glasses as it highlights the sky reflection, but I'm not
keen on using the sunglasses as a recurring theme.
This is the best out come form Photoshop I have so far in unit two. I have also
used curve on this to manipulate the darkness and brightness of the image. I
have darkened the image as it makes the bricks of the house stand and it also
helps highlight the bubbles, making their colours more prominent in the
picture. I have clearly over edited this photo with the curve but it does work
better than my publisher experiments which were too over edited.

21. Shutter speed contact sheet

22. 1/5 seconds 1/8 seconds1/6 seconds
Each of the photos are different due to the different speed the camera was on. When the shutter speed
was on 1/5 sec the shot was exposed to the light more as lens was open for longer and capture more
movement. However on the 1/6 sec shot, more movement was captured which is very peculiar even
though the 1/5 sec shot should have captured more because it was a longer shot. The 1/8 sec shot didn’t
have as much light exposed so it was darker than the other two and should have little movement because
it wasn’t open as long. Despite not being many bubbles on the shot there is still long movements of the
photo. I may need to retake these photos to get a better quality.
Using Shutter speed with bubbles

23. I have been editing this shutter speed photo of a Marble dropping into a jar.
I have tried to come up with as many different outcomes trying to make
them all look unique despite being the same photo. I have manipulated the
photo using curves, levels and hue/saturation to create several possible out
comes. However the best one has to be the first one I made, using levels on
Photoshop. The images look good edited however some look over edited
but do look good and I may consider continuing with marbles dropping in a
jar.

24. Refining my work
Here I have my shutter speed bubbles trying to see if I could get better picture than the one
before. I also did a refinement because the shutter speed exposure time didn’t make any
sense as the 1/5 seconds should have captured more bubbles than the 1/6 seconds one as it
was exposed for longer so I took these photos to improve quality.

26. These are my four best editing outcome's
from unit 2. I feel these were better than
the images in unit 1 so I may use continue
with bubbles and marbles for unit 3.

27. Continued hand with bubble editing
I wanted to continue with my favourite edit of this
image I think it was the best one so my theme is
bubbles I layered bubbles over the image using some
images from the internet and some from my own
photos.

28. Water bombs
When I first did the water bombs I set the camera to
shutter speed and tried to take some photos.
However it didn’t work due to the ISO being too low
and I ran out of time to take photos that day. I then
tried again on a higher ISO and a higher shutter
speed and got two good photos out of four water
bombs.(see slide before)

29. Here I have started to edit my water bomb photos. I
wanted to edit the photo so you can not only just see
the water in the balloon but the splashes behind it as
well, because with the right editing It can make a good
edited photo. I have used curve a lot because the other
editing techniques didn’t really show in the water but
did with the hand in the image.

30. Here is my second water bomb photo. I tried to use different editing
techniques to make it different to the first one. I like the bottom left one as it
really captures the water and the splashes in the background but in a x-ray
style way which make I look over edited but looks good as well. The best one
for the background is the right; I only used exposure but I created such a
great piece of work as the background stands out more but it also highlights
the water from the balloon.

34. Victoria baths
I recently went on a trip to Victoria Baths. The place was opened in 1906 meaning the building has withstood wear, tear and
erosion. This makes the building more interesting to take photos of especially since the old décor went well with the colour the
marbles. The marbles were green and brown which made them blend in with the whole of the baths feature but also made them
stand out to a degree that makes good photos. There were male 1st and 2nd class baths and then female baths. I used males 2nd
class bath to photograph bubbles. The bubbles worked well in the bath as they matched the scene as the baths were used to
cleanse the users because back then they had not hot running water. I also used the committee room where meeting used to be
held to take photos as the marbles worked well in depth of field using the window ledge in the room. I went into various rooms
such as the super intendants room to take photos of bubbles as the natural lighting helped bring the photos to life. The basement
was a room that scared most of my class as it had quite an eerie feel however it was the perfect place to take more photos as the
darkness helps bring out the colour in the bubbles and with little lighting we had in there the marbles were able to pick up the
reflection and create some really good photos. I did go of topic with bubbles and marbles and photographed some of the hall
ways like the one in the basement and the one near the super intendants rooms and I did take photos of the baths when no
people were there, this is because I wanted to try something new doing openings as a side bit especially since the tiles and old
wooden floors and worn bricks had such history it made it hard not to photograph them. After World War 2 when most people
had indoor plumbing and hot water, the baths became less popular and not many people went to the baths as they had them in
their houses although it was a rough patch for the owners but the now it’s a great landmark where over 6000 people come and go
each week, taking photos, going to different conventions and making short films.

35. Victoria Baths Contact Sheet
My intentions here was just to capture bubbles and marbles in the decaying greatness of
Victoria Baths. I had no intention of taking photos of parts of Victoria baths till I saw how
well they worked in the photos so I ended up taking some photos of some hallways and he
basement and the baths Itself.

ways but I chose the best
edits for each photo. On the
bubble edit, I was trying to
created a similar bubble to
Richard Heeks (slide 16) the
others I was just seeing what
edit worked well for each
photo and the best one
would o on show however in
the remaining 5 I was trying
to show the decay of Victoria
baths trying to show that
even the erosion of historical
buildings can look good in
photos.

40. Reflect and Progress
• Starting the still life task I was confused as to what I should do. However I brought in some objects that would explain me, which happened to marbles sunglasses
and comics. These objects link to the topic of sense of place because they are my sense of place as they are the object I feel most comfortable with. I then
developed further and took more photos at home of marbles. They were informed by two photographers I found Neil Barnett and Matthew Owen (see slide 4 and
5). Seeing how well the marbles worked out I decided to continue with them and refine the photos on Photoshop, despite some of the Photoshop edits being over
exaggerated some of them worked out well. The whole of this task lead me onto many more opportunities in task two: documenting an activity.
• Throughout task two I had plenty of options to use, I could of used sunglasses, books, marbles or bubbles linking to things being round and something that can be
an activity. There were some similar objects used; for instance the sunglasses, apart from they were used to document an activity. Taking the photographs I tried
to use some camera techniques such as framing however it did not work out well due to the type of camera I was using which was a IPhone camera as I did not
have a proper camera doing that task. Trying to capture the bubbles in the sunglasses was a challenge so they didn't turn out all that well. However one particular
photo I took which was a close up of bubble reminded me of a photographer called Richard Heeks who is also the artist I researched who informed my work. I then
moved on to shutter speed trying out bubbles and marbles, the bubbles worked out well although the shutter speed times don't really make much sense due to
the little exposure time difference (see slide 21) I only edited one shutter speed photo as I decided to edit it more than once to show development and they
worked out well however some do look over exaggerated due to my particular taste in editing but they do look good. (see slide 22) But I could do with retrying the
shutter speed and see if I can take better photos. I took very few photos doing the shutter speed due to sharing a camera with two other students but that was ok
because I could refine the photos I already took to see if I can get anymore good ones.(see slide 23) It was good when I got my own camera for the refinement as I
took some good photos, however due to the batteries on my camera was low I borrowed one from another student which was even better because their camera
had automatic shutter speed unlike mine which had manual. The photos for the refinement turned out pretty well and I decided to edit only one photo from that
contact sheet as well. However I took this one step further and refined my editing by choosing one of my first edits to edit over (see slide 24 and 26) At the end of
this topic I also tried using shutter speed to capture water bombs as they were popping (see slide 26-29) doing this allowed me to broaden my choices for task
three and the trip to Victoria Baths.
• The Victoria Baths trip was a great trip, I got to see such a great old build in which the decor matched the things I was going to take photos of. (see slide 37and 38)
I did enjoy the place but I didn't really get any feeling about this place due to me not being an emotional person so no feelings or emotions were expressed in my
photos just pure thought. The photos I took were things I had to think about where to put things and how to lay it out, as no emotional drive me to take the
photos I took. I had thought greatly about how I should layout my work, despite it did not turn out how I thought there were good photos taken. Victoria Baths is a
very historical place, it has a past that is great to show through the erosion and wear, that’s why my photos feature most of the decay of Victoria Baths due to their
significant similarities and contrast in colour to the marbles. Its hard to explain how I don’t feel many emotions but my photos were things done in the moment
nothing to do with emotion just to do with where the marbles looked good in a room with different lightings. The photos I took were of my original object which
was marbles and task two objects; bubbles. My work was informed by previous photographers in task one and two as I was trying to create similar photos.
However I did go of my topic during the trip like I stated on slide 34 due to the fact the place was so historic and looked great as photos especially when they are
edited as it captures the decomposing walls. (see slide 39) I also went of my original photo ideas to see if I could start a new side topic in the task to show the
development of my work.
• I would like to develop my work further by continuing on with the marbles and bubbles but id also like to see what I can do with the other photos from Victoria
Baths however I have no clue on locations and initial ideas for them as I don't want to repeat myself in my work unless I refine my work from the other tasks and
develop on that however I have thought about it and need to decide where I am going with this. I like the idea of taking photos o landscapes and cloud which could
be a further development but my interest is also in marbles and bubbles and reflections so I will have o see where this progress takes me.

42. Caleb Tenenbaum
• Caleb Tenenbaum is a teenage amateur photographer from
New Jersey who became famous from coming up with the
idea to take photos through a clear marble.
• I like the idea this photographer has done here. I like how he
has capture landscapes through a clear marble capturing the
surrounding like a birds eye view shot. Its great how he uses
nothing but natural lighting, a clear marble, a beautiful
landscape and a camera to make these photos so eye
catching. The use of deep depth of field helps make the
caption in the marble stand out more as the background is
unfocused helping the lens focus on the marble.
• I would like to have at go at trying this as it seems like a good
idea to try out. However due to my restriction in location I
would have to go around focusing on iconic places around
my local area like capturing forests and parks and buildings
such as Ordsall Hall.

43. Gavin Hammond
• Gavin Hammond is a photographer who has captured
reflections of landmark in London in puddles and wet
pavements.
• His work is really good its simple and original in its own
way. I like how he uses puddles to do his reflections of
objects, places, nature etc. What I find interesting is he lets
you have a glimpse of what the object is in the corner of
the photo so you its an actual reflection. I also like how he
has edited the photos in black and white making them
seem like old type style photos adding more value to the
piece. The black and white effect also make the reflected
buildings and landmarks look like charcoal drawings.
• I would like to have a go at doing reflection again as my
reflection through sun glasses photos were not of a good
quality. Gavin Hammonds work seems like something I
would like to try only I would be taking photos from my
area rather than London.

44. Crystal Ball and Reflection Contact sheet
Here I was trying out taking photos through a clear glass
ball. I was trying to do work in the style of Caleb
Tenenbaum and Gavin Hammond using the puddles for
reflection.

49. Crystal ball refinement contact sheet
I have refined my crystal ball and reflection work, trying to get better photos than the first try. Some of the photos were successful but some
were not as my camera couldn’t focus on the ball as whoever was holding it was moving, which is a continuous problem for doing this type
of photography as I need someone to hold the ball. One that were steady was the ones where I rested the ball on the floor or on something
flat. I will need to do another shoot to see if I can refine it even more.

50. The best ones
These photos worked best as they have the strongest composition and capture
the whole of the ball in the shot. The other two show reflection and texture as
it captures nature in the shot.

51. For some of these edits I was trying out a new
technique I learnt. I was trying to create rain in
the image to change the mood of the picture. I
did this by using noise and motion blur on some
photos its obvious that there but it not always
looks good. The other part of this was trying to
create an iconic sunset in the ball, using curves
it was quite successful and its one of my
favourite pieces in this topic.

53. The Rain edit
1. Open image in Photoshop and
then click on curves
2. Make sure you click on the curve
layer.
3. Go to Filter and down to noise
and then press add noise. A box will
come up.
4. You can adjust how much noise
you want to put in it but the more
noise the better. Then press ok
5. Next go to filter
again and then press
blur and then motion
blur and the box a box
will show up.
6. You can change the angle the
noise will come in from. The best
is 70 because its at the right
angle for rain. The adjust the
distance making the rain really
thin or thick. Then press ok once
done.
7. Adjust the
curve to how
you like it and
enjoy the rain
in the photo.

55. Frozen food colouring water balloons
contact sheet
What I have done here is filled water balloons with water and put different colour food
colouring in each of them. Then I froze them. Once they were frozen I tried out different
environments form inside to outside to see which work best, I tried flash, no flash, natural
lighting, kitchen lighting. They were melting and left colour streaks so I photographed that
as well. I refroze them and waited till night time to take them out again and they I tried
different lightings and environments again but this time I used tea light to light up the
frozen balloons instead of natural lighting. I found it was easier to take the photos inside
as I got the shadows of them on the wall and unlike outside it wasn’t windy so the tea
lights remained intact unlike outside where they kept blowing out. The next slide shows
my favourite of all of the pictures.

57. Refinement
This is my photo refinement. I feel this is a good refinement as I changed the location and got clearer
shots of media city on a bright sunny day making the shots clearer to take. Some of them are better
than other as in some photos I cut off the top of the ball, which makes it un useful despite it being a
good photo. What I need o do now is refine the refinement photos.

58. Nikon camera
These are the photos I took with the colleges Nikon camera, I found it more difficult to take photos with
it as I didn’t know how to use it. Some of them turned out well but others not so well.

59. The best photos
I think these are the best photos as they are the ones that are most focused and keeps the
whole of the ball in the shot. There are only two reflection photos as they are the best two.
There is a picture of media city not through the ball or reflection but because its looks like a
professional photo.

60. Here I was using some new techniques I
learnt, using liquefy to create a
distorted image of a crystal ball. I have
also used tint on the black and white
section making the image have a sepia
look to make it seem more old and
classic. I also used overlay on two similar
photos to outline media city, just too see
what I will look like. I think the liquefied
ball worked well as it looks unusual but
interesting. The over lay worked well as
It looks like a graphic match. The ball
with the rain in it didn’t work as well as it
looked over edited and didn’t look as
good as the others. My work with the
crystal ball is done, I want progress into a
similar theme to do with landscapes and
clouds like I mentioned on reflect on
progress.

61. Clouds Contact Sheet
Here I was trying to move on from taking photos of different places through the crystal ball to clouds in different places. I think this
was the most fun shoot I have taken as clouds are one of my favourite things to photograph especially since there's so many ways
to make clouds look good whether its changing the colours of he clouds or through changing the kind weather in the image. I will
be looking at lots of negative space with the clouds. I wanted to move on to clouds to make the work up to my final out come
more personal as I have a strong passion for clouds, it still links in with the crystal ball as it will link in with landscapes because the
photos I take wont just be clouds but will be landscapes and structures in the background.

62. The best photos
These are the best photos because some of them have odd angles that look good and professionally took. Some of them
capture the texture of the clouds making them look surreal. Others show the clouds off in different weather conditions
like when its sunny and raining. The sunset ones look the most professional in my opinion as the sky and clouds turn a
different colour making the photo look more interesting.

68. Clouds refinement
Refining my cloud photographs I went out and took some more photos trying to take them at a peculiar angle
as the best photos that worked well on the last sheet was the ones at different angles on my street. However
due to weather conditions and my living conditions if didn’t manage to get more photos of my street. But
when its not raining I will be able to refine these photos by taking more on my street.

69. The best photos
These are the best photos due to the angle of the camera again. The odd angles
capture the clouds well and contrasts with he building making the photos more
interesting to look at.

71. At first I though these edits were good, now they look very over edited and un professional.
One does work which is the black and white tint (top right) as it gives it a sepia effect.

75. Clouds
This photo shoot didn’t go as well as planned. There was too much motion blur
for the first couple of photos and the rest had a high ISO (ISO 1600) which was
too much, the next shoot I do will be on a lower ISO so the photos wont look as
blurry.

76. Using the latest photo shoot I have chosen the best photos
from it and edited it. It was hard to pick out the good one due
to the ISO being so high but this one was alright as it was the
clearest one.

77. Despite this picture being blurry I managed to make some good edits with it. I think the two best edits
are the two one on the right as they look moderately edited, where as the other too are over
exaggerated and you cant really see the clouds or the details on the building.

80. Evaluation
• I am very much proud of the work I have done, despite some may be not as good as the others or too over edited
but there are the good edits and the interesting photos. My final piece is the raw photos of clouds put together in
alignment to look like they follow on from each other. I have come a long way from my reflect and progress to now. I
have gone through marbles, bubbles, light, colour, reflection, crystal ball, frozen coloured water balloons,
landscapes and clouds. How I got to clouds was linked to the crystal ball work as I took photos through the crystal
ball of landscapes and many of those photos included cloud and skies whether they were in the background or
more prominent than the landscape, after editing a couple of my photographs (see slide 60 and 51) I decided I
wanted to move on to clouds as they looked good edited. Working with the crystal ball was good work once I got
the hang of it and I found it easer to take photos with it, the only problem was the landscapes as it was hard to go
anywhere to take photos. Working with the crystal ball made me want to work with landscapes or skies as I made
me realise how good they look raw or edited and just gave me the idea to move on to that. During the crystal ball
work I did some experimenting with frozen food coloured water balloons and they turned out pretty well especially
the ones with the tea lights. As I progressed with the cloud work I ended up incorporating buildings such as the
houses on my street onto the photos at odd angles as they looked interesting especially since the house on my
street contrasted with the clouds, which is why most of my photos are at odd angles. Most of my cloud work
however was blurred due to the ISO being high, however some of them had motion blur due me taking the photos
in the car to get the odd angle. After everything I’ve done in this I feel I enjoyed taking the cloud photos the best as
they were more fun to take however more stressful as this is Britain and the cloud don’t do much especially on cold
day when its just all cloudy and no gaps of skies.
