Selection of surge protective device (spd) (part 1) electrical notes & art...Ashok Kumar Jena
Surge protective devices (SPDs) divert or limit surge currents to protect electrical equipment from over voltages caused by lightning or switching. SPDs have a low resistance path that allows surge energy to ground, then return to a high resistance after the surge. The document discusses the differences between surge arrestors and surge suppressors, explaining that arrestors protect distribution systems while suppressors protect sensitive electronics. It also notes that an SPD's rating does not depend on the panel size, as surges do not recognize panel size.

This is a great guide to surge protection from Hager and if you would like Hager Surge Protection fitted to your Bypass Switches Input for mains one or two please call us on 0800 978 8988 or email sales@criticalpowersupplies.co.uk
Critical Power Supplies provide a range of surge protection kits that can be fitted to any of our bypass switches or consumer units to meet Amendment 1 of the 17th Edition.
The surge protection devices in the kit offer type 2 protection to the BS EN 61643 standard, to ensure conformity with the current edition of BS 7671.
Amendment 1 of the 17th Edition requires electricians to conduct a risk assessment of properties to see if they require surge protection.
When you consider that many homes have a lot of sensitive electronic equipment, such as TVs, Hi-Fis, PCs and printers that would be adversely affected by a voltage surge, then the need for such devices increases.
Transient overvoltages are not just caused by a direct lightning strike, a nearby strike, within a kilometre, can cause substantial damage. Other causes can be fluctuations in the power supply or from equipment such as microwaves or showers being switched.
Our surge protection kit can prevent the spread of overvoltages in electrical installations and protect the equipment connected to it. It is characterised by an 8/20us current wave.
To gain a greateer understanding of Surge Protection and our Surge Protection Kit & Devices download a copy of our Guide to Surge Protection Devices.
1) The document provides guidance on selecting and installing surge protection devices (SPDs) to protect electrical equipment from damage caused by transient overvoltages.
2) It recommends using a Type 1 SPD at the origin of an installation, Type 2 SPDs at distribution boards, and Type 3 SPDs near sensitive terminal equipment as part of a cascading protection scheme.
3) Key factors in selecting SPDs include the installation's exposure to lightning, the sensitivity of equipment to be protected, and BS 7671 requirements for impulse withstand voltages and surge current ratings.
1. Ground Fault Protection (GFP) devices are used to protect electrical installations from fire risks by quickly detecting insulation faults.
2. GFP devices operate by measuring residual fault currents, which involves monitoring the vector sum of all live conductor currents and tripping the circuit if it exceeds the device's threshold.
3. Installation standards like IEC 60 364 and the National Electrical Code (NEC) require the use of GFP or Residual Current Devices (RCD) depending on the earthing system, with the NEC specifying very low sensitivity GFP devices for North American TN-S systems to address fire risks.

sensors that are located in hazardous areas where the method of protection implemented by the plant or facility is Intrinsic Safety.
This document provides an overview of surge protection and transient surges. It defines a transient surge as a brief high-voltage spike lasting millionths of a second. The document discusses how surges can damage equipment and cost businesses billions annually. It describes how surge protective devices (SPDs) work by diverting damaging currents away from equipment. The document emphasizes that proper SPD location and installation is important for effective protection. It provides guidance on selecting appropriate protection levels based on surge risk and discusses relevant industry codes and standards.
This document provides an overview of intrinsic safety and why it is chosen for instrumentation systems in hazardous areas. It discusses that intrinsic safety (1) prevents explosions by ensuring low energy levels, (2) can be used in all zones as it is the only technique proven safe in Zone 0, and (3) permits live maintenance without gas clearance as fault conditions are considered in the design. Intrinsic safety works by restricting electrical energy to below ignition levels and uses three levels ('ia', 'ib', 'ic') that balance explosion risk against ignition risk for the zone.

Behavioral studies of surge protection componentsjournalBEEI
In our daily life, almost all the items we used, being a computer, television, lift or vehicle we drive consist of some kind of electrical or electronics component inside. The operation of these devices could be severely affected by lightning activity or electrical switching events, as there are more than 2000 thunderstorms in progress at any time resulting in 100 lightning flashes to ground per second. In practice, any device using electricity will subject to surge damages induced from the lightning or switching of heavy load. Surge protection device (SPD) is added at the power distribution panel and critical process loop to prevent damage subsequently cause plant shutdown. There are many questions raised on the SPD. How can this small device protect the equipment from large energy release by the lightning? What is inside the device? How does it work? This paper provides comprehensive detail in revealing the science and engineering behind the SPD, its individual component characteristic and how does it work. The technical information presented is limited to surge protection on equipment; surge protection for building structure will not be discussed here.

1. Lightning strokes produce extremely large pulses of electrical energy, with currents of several thousand amperes and voltages of several thousand volts, at high frequencies of around 1 megahertz but for short durations from microseconds to milliseconds.
2. Lightning can affect electrical installations through direct strikes on buildings or indirect strikes on overhead power lines supplying buildings, which can propagate high currents and voltages for kilometers. Nearby strikes can also induce overvoltages through electromagnetic effects.
3. The impacts of lightning strokes include thermal and mechanical damage from lightning currents flowing through structures, as well as dangerous thermal flashovers. Overvoltages from lightning can propagate as common mode voltages between live conductors and earth or as differential mode voltages between
Three key points about distribution switchboards:
1. Distribution switchboards must comply with standards like IEC 60439-1 to ensure dependability. Standards define functional units and required separation between units.
2. There are two main types - traditional switchboards with fixed components, and functional switchboards which are modular and standardized for flexibility.
3. Functional switchboards have advantages like modularity, faster installation, and certification to standards which ensure reliability. Compliance with standards is essential for adequate dependability.
The document discusses the need for lightning protection systems and describes their key components. It explains how lightning occurs through the separation of positive and negative charges in thunderclouds. Lightning protection aims to control the passage of lightning by capturing strikes on air terminals and safely directing the energy to ground. The document compares methods for determining where to place air terminals, such as the Rolling Sphere Method, and describes the functions of air terminals, downconductors, and grounding systems that make up an effective lightning protection installation.
1) Selecting the appropriate surge protection requires considering the exposure level and criticality of the equipment to be protected. Standards such as ANSI/IEEE C62.41 and IEC 61643 provide guidance on recommended surge ratings for different exposure levels.
2) Point-of-entry protection for highly exposed or critical sites may require surge ratings of 100kA or higher, while protection for distributed circuits remote from entry points could require as little as 3kA.
3) European standards define protective zones based on the lightning environment and divide typical facilities into zones where different classes of protective devices are recommended based on the expected surge levels.
