A gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart that provides a graphical illustration of a project schedule to plan, coordinate, and track specific tasks. Gantt charts are useful tools for analyzing and planning complex projects by helping to plan tasks, schedule when they will be carried out, plan resource allocation, and determine the critical path for completing a project by a deadline. The critical path is the sequence of activities that must be completed on schedule or the entire project will be delayed.
Magazine advertisements follow certain conventions to be effective. They typically include a headline that grabs attention, a visual that reinforces the headline, and a short body of text that provides further details about the product or service. The goal is to communicate the key message in a concise yet engaging manner that encourages readers to learn more.
Sugarcane, or sugar cane, are several species of tall perennial true grasses of the genus Saccharum, tribe Andropogoneae, native to the warm temperate to tropical regions of South Asia and Melanesia, and used for sugar production. It has stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in the sugar sucrose, which accumulates in the stalk internodes. The plant is 2 to 6 m (6 ft 7 in to 19 ft 8 in) tall. All sugar cane species interbreed and the major commercial cultivars are complex hybrids. Sugarcane belongs to the grass family Poaceae, an economically important seed plant family that includes maize, wheat, rice, and sorghum, and many forage crops
This document discusses literacy in the context of school and technology. It introduces the concept of moving from a Web 1.0 model of static, read-only pages to a Web 2.0 model that allows for more interactivity and user contribution of content. The document suggests that for students, embracing these new literacy skills enabled by Web 2.0 technologies is more important than the technologies themselves.

This document discusses gateway drugs and their potential to lead to use of more dangerous substances. It defines gateway drugs as those whose habitual use, such as alcohol or marijuana, may lead to addiction to cocaine or heroin due to biological and attitudinal factors. While marijuana is often seen as harmless, its use increases the likelihood of using harder drugs and many marijuana users become addicts. Similarly, while alcohol is widely consumed, it can become part of a routine and lead people to need alcohol to cope, ultimately becoming alcoholics.

Max Weber analyzed the origins and evolution of Western capitalism. He identified the "spirit of capitalism" as a set of Protestant values like hard work, progress, and the moral sanctioning of wealth accumulation. According to Weber, capitalism emerged from a combination of historical factors in Europe, especially the spread of Calvinism in the 15th-16th centuries. Calvinism's emphasis on worldly "callings" and the sign of salvation through success encouraged the moral energy and drive of capitalist entrepreneurs. Rationalism also contributed to capitalism through the application of science and techniques to production. However, Weber warned that capitalism could become dominated by materialism and dehumanize living conditions.

The document summarizes the history and impact of the Semantic Web. It discusses how the Semantic Web was originally envisioned as a way to make information on the web more machine-readable through semantic annotations. While early work showed promise, widespread adoption lagged behind expectations. Key impacts included positive but limited effects on web search through knowledge graphs, the rise of centralized social networks rather than distributed semantic social media, and limited use in e-commerce. Ongoing work continues on standards and applications while addressing challenges around centralization.

Between 2009 and 2012 the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded a series of programmes to encourage higher education institutions in the UK to release existing educational content as Open Educational Resources (OER) and to embed open practices in the institution. The HEFCE funded UK OER Programmes were run and managed by the JISC and the Higher Education Academy. Over the course of three years about £15M (€17,5M) was invested on projects that investigated the release and collection of OERs by individuals, institutions and subject communities. The Cetis “OER Technology Support Project” provided support for technical innovation across this programme.
In this conference paper we will present our reflections on the technical approaches taken, issues raised and the lessons learnt from the Programmes and the Support Project. The issues covered include resource management, resource description, licensing and attribution, search engine optimisation and discoverability, tracking OERs, and paradata (activity data about learning resources). Technical solutions discussed will include the use of social sharing platforms such as flickr and WordPress for resource dissemination; metadata embedded in HTML documents as RDFa, microdata and using the schema.org ontology; and sharing metadata and paradata using the Learning Registry (a network of schema-free data stores). As well as describing the achievements of the programme, we will also discuss the difficulties encountered and identify areas where further work is required.

This document summarizes the author's experience moving from heading the web services team at a modern, centralized university to a traditional, decentralized university. At the modern university, there was a strong emphasis on branding and visual identity across a centralized website. However, at the traditional university, websites were managed separately by different departments, leading to duplication, incorrect information, and a lack of consistent branding or user experience. The author outlines steps to improve communication, gain support from top administrators, and reshape the web team to develop a unified online identity and branding while still supporting individual departments.

Static Site Generators - Developing Websites in Low-resource ConditionIWMW
Paul Walk discusses static site generators as an alternative to content management systems for publishing websites. Static site generators allow content to be authored in simple text files using formats like Markdown and compiled into static HTML and CSS that can be hosted on basic web servers. They provide benefits like minimal infrastructure needs, easy preservation of content, and increased security compared to systems that rely on databases. However, they may not be as user-friendly for content authoring. In general, static site generators are best suited for smaller, simpler websites that don't require advanced user access controls or dynamic functionality.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

Aims of Session
We’ve listened to Chris Harris’s
overview of HERO. Webmasters will
make it work. What do we have to do?

About The Session
20 participants plus
Brian Kelly and Sarah Austin and Quentin North
from EPIC
In the session:
• Participants listed what we wanted from the
session
• Sarah gave a demonstration of:
– The user’s view of the HERO Web site
– A brief description of the information flow model
– A demo of the administrator’s user interface
(Web forms)
3. 3
Our Interests
Participants were interested in:
• The benefits of HERO to UK HEIs
• The resource commitments we’d have
to provide
• The marketing strategy for HERO
• QA issues
• Information flow issues (where is the
master source of information?)
• HERO point of contact
4. 4
EPIC’s Responsibilities
Some of the questions were not part of EPIC’s
responsibilities
EPIC have been subcontracted to develop the
Web site
Out of scope for EPIC:
• Do we need HERO?
• Marketing HERO (Marketing contract still
under discussion)
• Solving institutional information flow
problems (although EPIC are aware this is
a major issue)
5. 5
HERO Point of Contact
Letter from Tim O’Shea (Master at Birkbeck and
HERO plc director?) send to VCs in August
asking for nominations for HERO contact
person
120 out of 180? institutions have responded
ACTION: Find out who your HERO contact is
and establish communication channels
(Note possible confusion between HERO and
HEROBAC - another HEFCE project)
6. 6
HERO Point of Contact (2)
Ideal point of contact doesn’t have to be a Web
master but ‘someone who can represent the
HEI at a national scale’
He or she should:
• Evangelise about HERO
• Draw on techies to provide effective
solutions
• Chase people for content
Note that EPIC will have to liaise with 190+
single points of contacts with differing levels of
expertise, knowledge, etc.
7. 7
Information Requirements
HERO to provide list of information
requirements to points of contacts shortly
e.g. URL of Personnel Web site and optional
brief description
ACTION: BK to ensure that the document is
available online
8. 8
Information Flow
• Some information to be obtained from central
points with well-established QA procedures
(e.g. HEFCE’s info on HEI addresses)
• Web-based forms (copy and paste)
• EPIC to pull XML files (EPIC to publish DTD
for use by institutional techies)
• Paper input (keep it quiet!)
9. 9
Work Smarter
Concern that there are lots of similar requests
for information from HE agencies (e.g.
Research in Scotland) and commercial bodies
HERO can provide opportunity to move
towards use of backend databases, which will
enable input files to HERO (and WAP sites,
etc.) to be created with minimum of effort
10. 10
Competition for HERO
“Give me £xxx and I will advertise your
vacancies”
Should we:
• Use them as well
• Use them instead
• Agreed not to use them
Note that HERO is owned by the HE
community and has support from our
funding agencies and VCs - so we should
support it!

Summary
Very useful session
EPIC staff seem to be good people to work
with and were responsive to our concerns
ACTION: Need to hold similar (longer)
events regionally
