Collect the equipment required for the procedure and place it within reach on a tray or trolley, ensuring that all the items are clearly visible:
Clean procedure tray
Non-sterile gloves
Disposable apron (optional)
Tourniquet
Cannula (size appropriate to the indication for cannulation)
Sterile dressing pack (to provide a sterile field)
Cannula dressing
Luer lock cannula cap or extension set
Gauze swabs
Normal saline 0.9% (10 ml)
Syringe (10ml)
Alcohol swab (2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% isopropyl)
Sharps container
4. Indication for cannulation
• Intravenous fluid administration
• Intravenous medications
• Intravenous chemotherapy
• Intravenous nutrition
• Blood and blood products administration
• Administration of radiological contrast
5. Contra indication
Do not insert close to infections site
Vein of fractured limb
Where there is an AV FISTULA present
Oedema
Extra care to be taken on patients with bleeding
&clotting disorder and on warfarin
6. PROCEDURE OF USING THE IV CANNULA
• Introduce yourself to the patient
• Check the patient name and the type of fluid to be given
• Explain the procedure to the patient gain consent
• Sanitise your hands using alcohol cleanser
• Position the arm so that it is comfortable for the patient and identify a vein
• Apply the tourniquet and re-checkthe vein
• Put on your gloves , clean the patient skin with the alcohol wipe and let it dry
• Remove the cannula from its packaging and remove needle cover ensuring not
to touch the needle
• Stretch the skin distally and inform the patient that the should expect a sharp scratch
• Insert the needle, bevel upwards at about 30 degrees
• Advance the needle until a flashback of blood is seen In the hub at the back of the
cannula
• Once the flashback of blood is seen progress the entire cannula a further 2mm place the
cannula
• And apply the tegaderm
