Access points can operate in different modes to perform various functions. Local mode provides data services while monitoring other channels. Monitor mode permanently scans all channels. Sniffer mode captures frames on one channel and sends them to a station. Rogue detector mode detects rogues on the wired network. Some APs support H-REAP mode to provide access when the controller is not reachable, and bridge mode to create mesh networks.
